my wife works in the local tescos, Sunday nights are usually the worst,.but christmas eve and new years eve, bank hols are the same, people come in at 5 min to closing timewith a big shopping trolley expecting to do a large shop! the shops open most days for 12 hrs surely people can do there shopping before its about to close,1 customer on new years eve moaned when entering the shop at 7.00pm(closing time) that the lights were off,my wife said we are closing, all she did was tut, then asked if they were open on new years day,she said no,the woman moaned, the wife said to her, arent we entitled to a day off over the festive period as well? she just stormed off, some people think you should be there 24/7 365 days a year
I prefer to get up early & be over at my local Lidl's,Tesco's or Asda for 0800hrs when they open, then I can get what I want without rushing, the shop is relatively empty & the shelves fully stocked. And the fruit & veg hasn't been manhandled to death!:D0 -
in our local tesco,s on christmas eve,the queues were that big, some customers were not prepared to wait in the queue,so thought it was ok to walk out the store with alcohol that they hadnt payed for, pity i couldnt take that attitude when buying a laptop or £500 plasma tv !Unintentional wrote: »So many High and mighty customers complain about not getting their own way and yet things like this happen, Some people need to take a good look at themselves before they try to act all like 'Oh I pay your wages'Live in my shoes for a week, then tell me your lifes hard!0 -
the amount of customers who are abusive to my wife is unbeleiveable, especially in a small store like the one she works in,when she tries to asnwer back she usually get the response of but your only a shelf stacker! as if its the lowest of the low! if it wasnt for her they wouldnt have any drink to buy!!!!willing2learn wrote: »Most customers i work with are nice, but you do get a certain type, thankfully in the minority (and the original poster doesn't sound like this at all) who do have a sugar coated view of working life, or haven't worked much at all and just don't have a clue. These people are the ones that are usually rude. They have a stereotyped view of people in retail also, that we are stupid, not very bright, then there's the usual 'i'm in a hurry!'Live in my shoes for a week, then tell me your lifes hard!0 -
exactlly out local tesco,s open at 7.00 am on a sunday iam usually there between 8-9 and its a nice pieceful shopI prefer to get up early & be over at my local Lidl's,Tesco's or Asda for 0800hrs when they open, then I can get what I want without rushing, the shop is relatively empty & the shelves fully stocked. And the fruit & veg hasn't been manhandled to death!:DLive in my shoes for a week, then tell me your lifes hard!0 -
Some people have absolutely no xmas cheer about them. 8:45pm on new years eve the manager of asda lets the asda george staff leave a bit early, its a bit inconvenient but lets face it, its not the end of the world so I would be tempted to just get over it, accept that its xmas and that just move on.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thankfully gone are the days of 'The Customer is always right'
Glad your wife was able to make a comment, ref closing time, I am sure she was very polite to the customer whilst pointing out they were closing.
Thankfully the vast majority of customers do treat the retail staff with a great deal of respect at all times, plus they don't shop at near closing time, its usually just a few and most of them are embarrassed when they realise the store is about to close.
Working in retail can be a very rewarding job for the 'people loving person' you can have lots of banter and fun with good customers, they in return receive great customer service.
The OP in my opinion should have been served, to just be told the staff had gone home is not good enough, I would escalate to an official complaint regardless of it being New Years eve, the store was open with 15 minutes to go.
Just the opinion of an ex retail worker.0 -
Are you seriously saying that if a store closes to customers at 4pm then that exact time is when the staff finish?
I somehow doubt that, how the hell is a member of staff supposed to finish at 4 and be out the door at 4?
Surely there is a bit of flexibility built in, as I am sure Mr Tesco/Asda/Morrisons et al weren't born yesterday.
that is the time that staff are paid until, yes
I worked in retail for 13 years and i was paid 9 until 5.30...regardless of you needing to be there at 8.30 to start the tills up etc and actually leaving at gone 6 because of cashing up and printing off reports.
and no, that wasn't me being soft or whatever people may say, it was company policy and this was a major high street retailer0 -

Same when I was at Sainsbury's.If your shift ended at 1500hrs,you got paid until 1500hrs,you were allowed,iirc,10 minutes past the finish time to clock out if you were held up but that was at the managers discression..0 -
