  • We've just been landed with a bill of £650 for annual service plus repairs to brakes and suspension on our car. :(

I'm pretty sure the garage is not having us on. Although I don't know a huge amount about cars, it's pretty difficult to argue with people who say your brake pads are dangerously thin and your suspension will break if you don't repair it. The garage is the one we bought the car from second-hand (an independent garage specialising in VW's and Audi's).

But this is surely an area for money saving savvy and I can't find any articles about it on the website. It would be good to know any tips on how you spot a good garage, what is good value for money on a service, how much different jobs should cost etc. I'm sure that sort of information is out there somewhere but I have no idea how to find it.

So Martin please write an article, and meanwhile does anyone have any thoughts, tips or commiserations on what you do when the garage says you need to spend £650 on your car?

Not sure if its been mentioned before; but you can get an MOT for £12.50 in Tesco clubcard deals. Thats only a 1500 wine pointer once a year !

  • Unfortunately this is really will only suit people close but I found the cheapest MOT I think I have ever seen. KIA, the main dealer at Braintree in Essex, is doing MOT’s for £10.00. I dropped off before they were open on the way to work and picked it up on the way home. Always communicating with me. Even to phone and tell me it was done and passed. They have been doing it for a year they say and will carry on for the future. So get on it people.

  • Hi

This is the response I got from Hammersmith & Fulham council - can anyone be of assistance please?

"Thank you for taking the time to submit your web enquiry regarding MOT testing stations in Hammersmith and Fulham.

Having consulted with our Environment Department, I am sorry to inform you that at present Hammersmith and Fulham does not run any Local Authority MOT test stations."
  • can you help me locate one in Sheffield please?
  • The Government are proposing to increase the MOT on your car from every year to every two years.

This may sound good and save you £50 a year.

    However, it comes with pitfalls.

The National Insurers Federation has indicated that cars will no longer be safe on the roads and they will therefore increase your premiums in the region of 65%.

This will cost you way over the £50 you are saving.

    More importantly:

We have undertaken a study on deaths caused on roads by faults on vehicles that is covered by your MOT.

We are shocked and saddened at the figures.

We guarantee there will be an extra 1800 deaths on our roads that can be avoided, if we stick to an MOT every year.

The government are saying they need to do this for two reasons, bring us in line with the E.U and the cost of the scheme to the government is far too expensive.

How much cost would you put on your childrens, mothers, fathers life, if one of them is one of the 1800?

Please do not let this government condemn 1800 lives for the death sentence, for what? £50?

Please sign this petition, and please send it to all your contacts.

    Thank you.

  • Have just taken my car in for an MOT in Kings Heath area of Birmingham, not only did I only have to pay £45, (a saving of £5) but for there were no faults found with my car; unlike a Ford dealership in Birmingham which has found an expensive list of faults each time my car has been taken there in the last few years.

If anyone is interested I can give you the contact number of the garage.
