The only realistic option as I see it, is to plan journeys more carefully.
If they don't skin us on fuel tax, they will get it from elsewhere.
Of course none of this will bother the politicians, they get a very nice allowance on their transport costs.0 -
Hello,
I have had to resort now to using our bus passes instead of using the car. What with the increases in fuel and parking charges, it is getting ridiculous.
My beloved car - something I saved up for years (BMW 325) is certainly not going to be given up! Bought new a couple of years ago, it is my pride and joy. I refuse to entertain a little tin box on wheels just to suit the government and the 'tree huggers'.
My annual mileage has gone down from 12,000 to about 5,000 now hence I can still afford to drive it when I want. I'm just waiting for them to put the RFL up on anything over 1000cc's and more than 50BHP!!
I try and find novel ways in saving the cost of petrol.
My specialist hospital is where we used to live (330 miles away) I haven't changed it because it is one of the best in the country for my condition. But as I claim for mileage to get there and back (£105) that means that our visits to see friends and family now have to coincide with the visits to the hospital. Although it actually costs approx £140 in petrol for the two journeys, we can afford these little 'holidays' at a virtual cost of only £35!
Sometimes we use the train to get there and back in a day (CT Scans, blood tests etc), using our Senior Card, and booking in advance, the actual train fares only come to £70 for the both of us. The savings of £35, we use when we take the car up instead, making that trip a free one, apart from hotel expenses for a week.
Likewise, I do some charity work that pays mileage expenses @ 50p per mile. If I visit someone where we would like to go for the day (especially in the summer - the beach, shops or meal), I combine the two and the expenses reimbursed of getting there more than compensates for the expenses involved in the trip (lunch etc)
I try and think of ways to combine a visit (dropping friends off on the way) and asking for a contribution to the fuel costs. I don't drink, but our friends do, so I agree to do the driving if we are going out for the evening, I charge less than what a taxi would cost - which is still more than the cost of the fuel used. That makes the rest of the week or two free!!
As for the UK public, yes you are right we will roll over grumble a bit but just accept it. Besides what else can we do. Refuse to use our cars? Refuse to pay the increases on everything we buy due to increased transportation costs or maybe have demos up and down the country, setting fire to cars and buildings on our way? No, we are too reserved to do that, besides which the government now have enough power to stop us upsetting the status quo - anti terrorism law is one such incorrectly overused law!!0 -

What do you plan to do to show your displeasure? Have you been waving a placard at your local refinery?
It seems that plenty of people want "something doing" but are more than happy to wait for somebody else to do it.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

I don't think waving placards does any good - especially at the refinery.
It's far more to do with the government 'stealing' our money with the huge percentage of the cost of fuel that is tax.0 -
Maybe so, but the usual response to this sort of thing is "do as the French do" - except that those people seem to think that somebody else should be doing it for them.
And when we had students "doing as the French do", the right-wing press and its readership went into full-on outrage mode.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -

The Price of Petrol
Where does the money you pay for a litre of petrol really go? Do you know what you are actually paying for?
If a litre of unleaded cost 119.9p, it would be split in the following way:And if it was diesel at a cost of 120.9p, it would split as follows:
