I have recently claimed back bank charges from my partners A&L account we had to go to court but won..
They have now written to him stating they are giving him 30 days notice to shut his account down..we have already opened another account with Halifax for him with the added £100 !
But i have been doing a little research and it seems to be likely that banks cannot just shut your accounts down..on tue i will get my partner to make a complaint to the Financial Ombudsman and see what happens somebody else successfully did this against A&L ..I will keep you all posted!

did you actually have to appear in court or did you start court proceedings and then A&L paid up, just that all the threads I have been reading, this is the 1st I have seen from somebody "we had to go to court but won...".
You have just got me abit worried that maybe A&L are starting to fight back. Please reply

    From this post:

it appears Saver Mum filed the claim, the bank acknowledged, but then offered payment.
  • Thank you nickmack, that was the answer I was looking for, I was hoping that A & L or any other bank aren't starting to fight back and actually defend it in court (and I dont mean just say they are defending and then pay up within days)

I have reported A&L to the ombudsman service today for closing my account. I personally think that the same sort of snowball should be started rolling against this petulant act of closing accounts, as has rolled for claiming charges. If enough people complain about a banks behaviour they will have to come into line and treat people fairly.

Llyods closed a current account I had with them in November without informing me. The balance was negative £35 (which was a charge for a returned standing order); a debt they had obviously written off. They also sent me a cheque for £35 - so I am now £35 up.
  • Hi,

I want to reclaim bank charges from Abbey, from a couple of years ago, but my account situation is complicated...

I have an overdraft with them, which officially stands at £1900 although for the purpose of my monthly budget I have got it down to £1500, I just haven't actually reduced it officially with them. The overdraft was interest free up until a year ago as the account wasa graduate account. Now they are charging me when I am overdrawn, but for reasons about to be explained, I am not using the overdraft facility at the moment so I'm not being charged for it.

I also have a 7% interest savings account with them, into which £250 is transferred every month for 12 months, from my current account. To cover this transfer, I stuck £3000 in the current account in November last year, which just sits there and drip-feeds into the savings account. This £3000 means that as far as Abbey is concerned, I have not gone into my overdraft since November 2006. However, I will dip back into it in a couple of months' time once the £3000 buffer gets reduced.

If I try to reclaim charges, and Abbey close my current account, I think I will lose out on the interest from the savings account too, since the deposits into the savings account have to be made from my Abbey current account, and all 12 deposits need to be made for the total amount of interest to be credited.

Is the best thing to do, to wait until the 12 months are up, get the 7% interest, close the savings account, THEN open an Alliance & Leicester parachute account with an interest free overdraft, THEN reclaim the charges? Or should I be brave and go for it now?

    All advice appreciated.

    Jo
  • Hi - Has anyone challenged Lloyds TSB? If so, Can you please tell me about ur experience and whether the account was closed? I'm considering asking for almost £1k's worth of charges back in just one year!! Your stories would be much appreciated. :-)
