  • Nationwide once threatened to close one of my 2 accounts, I wrote a letter back saying do it and ill sue you and 5 months later I still have the account and have heard nothing more!!!

I understand that if a bank closes your account without you saying it's ok, you can fight it through the bank and then through the banking ombusman who on a number of accasions have ordered the bank to pay damages to the customer - they do not however reopen the bank account.

I had an appointment with my Branch manager today to close my account - he told me that I could not close my account as I am currently £517.64 overdrawn ( I did have an agreed oD facility of £500 - but this has been taken away from me ) This surely cannot be the case, I am currently with the CCCS who are acting on my behalf and this figure is in with my plan.
So now I am looking forward to even more charges at a higher interest.

Any help advice would be appreciated

    Regards

Its pretty obvious that you have to pay back the debt before you can close it; otherwise I would be running up huge overdrafts and closing my account.

    Have I missed something?????????

You can close an account and owe them money, I closed my A & L account and was overdrawn by about £200.00, i have set up a repayment scheme with them through CAB, although now i am claiming (£770.00) from them as it is all unlawful charges that I am paying back, I am still paying it monthly though intill all is sorted, prob through the courts.

  • I have many people calling me who have debt problems

One of the things i help them do is to reclaim bank charges

The only ones that have had their accounts closed are Nationwide and Alliance & Leicester account holders

I know people who work on the bank charges team at Barclays, but that rarely close accounts and their policy is to offer in the region of 50% of the amount claimed

  • i claimed back my charges from barclays and they never once mentioned they wil close my account also hubby claimed back charges from natwest and they never closed his account either
  • Yorkshire Bank have closed my account and stopped sending me bank statements. I now have a solicitor sending me letters charging £20 each. My charges have increased by £130.00 since my initial letter reclaiming them. Can I add these to my charges list if I do not have all the dates they were charged??

I have tried to search for my answer, a few similar results found but not exactly so thought I'd post!

My Father wants to attempt to reclaim just under £5k worth of charges on his Natwest personal account, however he also has Natwest Business Account and is not fussed if they close his personal account (joint account with ex wife - my mum shopaholic hence amount of charges lol) but obviously does not want his business acount closed.

    Any answers appreciated!

    Hey All

First of all I would like to say getting my finances in order feels a lot less daunting after reading all of these posts! Thank you, and good luck everyone!

Earlier this year I opened my parachute accounts with HSBC before I even decided to try to reclaim charges from my old bank Lloyds. However I still have a current account with an overdraft of £2000 on it and a loan of just under £5000 with them. After adding up charges I could be repaid they won't come anywhere near paying off even the overdraft, only about £300. I have to say I'm panicking a little (a lot) about what will happen if they decide to close my account. Do Lloyds generally do this? My overdraft review is coming up in June and I doubt I will be able to pay it by then either... I have barely any money coming in and although I have cut down my outgoings as much as I can, sold my car and I'm applying for every job I can reasonably do, I'm worried that they will demand the money back and take me to court in retaliation. They have been far less than sympathetic every time I have called them and tried to explain my situation, and they even admitted they wouldn't help me until my accounts had reached their collections department, which so far hasn't happened, but I only had the one car to sell! I'm doing everything I can, but running out of options... a bit of advice would be very much appreciated, please and thank you!

you need to ask yourself if its worth taking the risk? Me personally i would wait out until that 300 would make a real difference to you without any impact on any other owings or accounts...It shouldnt be something that worries you...Thats just my oppinion though. You have enough on your plate!
