Got a 4x4? Would you like to put it to good use and confound the green 'antis'?

During the recent spell of snowy weather, over 1,500 volunteers nationwide have been mobilised in support of local emergency services (Out of hours Doctors, District Nurses, etc) and have also given vital service in getting key staff to work (Emergency control room staff, etc).

On top of all this, volunteers have been called out to deal with stranded vehicles and their occupants and to assist in clearing the road network.

These volunteers are a part of local groups under the umbrella of the National 4x4 Response Network (a registered charity).

If you own a 4x4, please consider joining your local group before the weather strikes again.

Together with the opportunity to help keep the country moving in extreme weather conditions, most local groups also have an active social calendar including camping weekends, training events, attendance at shows, etc.

There are also opportunities for non-4x4 owners to get involved as control and welfare staff who back the guys and girls on the ground. Ownership of a 4x4 is NOT a prerequisite of membership.

For more information (and to find your local group), please visit here : http://www.4x4response.info/

If anyone is in the Yorkshire or Lincolnshire area, please feel free to contact me direct and I'll be happy to answer any questions and help you to get involved.

Problem with placing 4x4's on a pedestal....

Most of the snow has melted around here, but 4x4 drivers seem to have failed to notice this fact and are now racing just about everyone on the roads as if to say "how dare you overtake my superior vehicle!!"
Like the idiot on Saturday in the Landy Disco who ran a set of red lights doing well in excess of 60mph after objecting to being overtaken by a 2wd Vauxhall Vectra........

I said it last year and i'll say it again this year..... You've had your few days of fun, now get out of the way and move over for the proper cars, suited to the other 98% of the years weather.

Agree 2wd with winter tyres can be nearly as good as a 4x4 in snow assuming it's not 2ft deep. All this 4x4 stuff is rather misleading and pointless. A 4x4 can turn the driver into the ultimate vvanchor in snow increasing their likelihood of an accident and campaigns like this just do not help.

You're quite right of course - there are fools who drive 4x4s. But there are many more who drive 2wds.

This is a genuine group of volunteers that I'm trying to get recruits and support for.

Our volunteers receive training and advice to prevent just this. Our emphasis is always on safety.
  • Very worthy, I'd seen a scheme getting publicised up in Aberdeenshire a couple of weeks ago and wondered if it was more widespread.
Strider could perhaps volunteer as back room staff. The drivers could pick him up and drop him off again, he'd perhaps pick up some pointers and be able to keep the tea flowing at HQ.
All joking aside, it's well worthy of a donation.

Do you not specify a type of 4x4?
We all know that certain 4x4's aren't much use for anything more taxing that the school run.....

Not taking the p1ss btw, genuine curiosity question :)
