They said they will do a sink test, and also that the issue is because there is norton 360 on there and a dormant, unused mcafee scanner (which even I know wouldnt cause the unit to overheat or corrupt most of my files) So I have little faith in them.

Any consumer rights info would be appreciated.

PC world doing a "Sink Test" - hope they take the water out first!

You're doing the right thing - I doubt they'll fix it, so let them do their bit and then pursue them for a refund. The question is what do you replace it with? Toshiba were excellent in the past, but we've had two returned for refunds in the last few years. My daughters HP is OK, but that runs fairly warm and the fan is noisy.

The o.h has a sony vaio which seems good. I never liked the "media centre"features of the hp anyway, it meddled with my viewing of pictures and how it arranged music. I would even consider another dell.

Re an earlier post of mine regarding the OP's laptop heating problem (that may or may not be connected to the hard drive failure):

and this recent 'innovation' from HP:

Good luck to the OP. Re consumer rights: whatever issues the laptop may have because of original build quality, that's actually not the OP's problem.

PC World retailed it three months ago and PC World is legally obliged to sort out the situation either by repair or exchange or refund.

It's then down to PCW to play hell with Hewlett Packard about the situation.

Yes thanks freddie i managed to get the music back too. it ran a checkdisk a few times and came back on like nothing happened, so i got it all backed up the usual way, then handed it in to pc world.

Any consumer rights info would be appreciated.
Thanks, glad you got your music off, (oh how Freddie loves playing John Cooper Clark's Chicken Town to the natives). As for PCW, oooooh no, see you got busted with Norton. The only good thing about Norton is a 650, Alford hill and Ludborough bends.

As for consumer rights, I see you have had the said trinket less than six months, it is PCW to say that the trinket is not faulty, not you, so get the boots oooot lass.

As for virus, other protection, see the techie bored, as Norton is pure excrement.:beer:
  • Freddie_Snowbits is correct. If you have had the laptop less than 6 months then it is up to PC World to prove that it was not faulty at the time of purchase. The onus is on them. You are entitled to either a repair or a full refund. I suggest that if you have problems, request to speak to a higher authority at PC World's Head Office. Big chains like these are normally governed by Head Office rules and the Store Manager might not be able to help you even if he wanted to.
I would also suggest that you do not loose your temper with them as this is normally counter-productive, they are much more likely to be sympathetic if you are firm but polite.
Failing this, you could always contact your Trading Standards Dept and ask for their help, they are normally very good in situations like yours.
    Good luck!
  • Thanks both. will look into better protection. I have pretty much always used norton, and never had viruses or anything but i suppose theres always a first time.

Well they have had it 2 days now and not heard anything back yet. Judging by the skill displayed they are still figuring out how to turn it on. Should i also be concerned that they didnt ask for my user password to log onto windows? my windows id is the administrative account.

I never lose my temper, I just have difficulty controlling my laughter at rediculous notions which occasionally may appear as I am being rude lol!

Don't be so blooming cheeky girl, they would struggle to lift the screen up, never mind plug the trinket in!
