                    Hi all looking for advice,
Bought a hp laptop from Pc world on 20/09/2010
The hard drive has packed in today, wiping everything.
I do have the extended warranty package so I can send it off to be repaired but I was just wondering if I have a faster recourse with the store and if they may be liable to exchange it for me?
I'm unaware of consumer rights.
Thanks in advance.

The store almost certainly won't exchange after this length of time. And it'd be easier to just call up and collect from your home - at this time of year, your laptop may be sat in store for a few days before anyone gets the time to book it in.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
 Now 20% cooler0

Sorry I should mention hp have said it should be returned as it gets too hot. It gets so hot it burns your skin, I'm presuming that's why the hard drives failed.0

OP, don't worry too much about the lost data.
That can easily be recovered from your backups after the laptop is repaired.0

I have data recovery with the extended warranty, so i can get that sorted, thanks. not so worried about the data, apart from some files most of my photos etc will be on facebook.
I mentioned the overheating to the techguy on the phone, it gets so hot its actually scarred one of my fingers where i touched the underneath, he seems to think thats the issue with the hard drive and has asked that i take it to the store and get the data recovered (as i havent backed up since november and have had a baby since and will have lost all her photos if i dont get the data back)
does this all sound right? im a bit worried about this over heating issue after his reaction.what if this heating issue gets worse and it happens again or causes a fire?0

what happens when you switch it on?
If the hard disk has really packed up, data recovery is going to be difficult, and may not be covered by whatever warranty you have!!

            hi closed,
it does come on, then it logs onto windows as a "temporary profile" stating nothing will be saved etc, all my personal data is gone, and only a few programs i installed are still there. For instance firefox. once i open firefox it tells me the file is corrupt, yet still opens it.
im hopeful (as was the techguy) that my data is recoverable. Im more concerned about having a overheating machine in my house with my child and pets.0

are you blocking the vents up?
If it boots, the hard drive hasn't failed, it's a (probably profile) corruption, create a new user, and try explorer or recuva deep scan to find your data!!
