The OP mentions this-I have data recovery with the extended warranty, so i can get that sorted, thanks. not so worried about the data, apart from some files most of my photos etc will be on facebook.
 So Wealdroam is right.
Not the same thing at all PC World will not be able to get data from a dead hard drive and photos copied to facebook are a much lower resolution that the originals.0

I have a caddy with a 250gb hard drive in it from my old dell laptop.
I back it up every month, with a simple button push. the files I haven't backed up are still on there: I can get on windows and can see them they are just not where I left them.
Will you please stop arguing about the files issue now, it's resolved, I'm sure I can manage to get off what I need.
Can someone answer simply if they should replace the unit due to what I consider a dangerous overheating issue( I did report this overheating within one week of purchase and was assured it was normal an no harm would occur) or if it is something repairable. I don't know if the heat is the fans failing or the battery. I can hear the fans though.0

Glad your files are safe. I am afraid I cannot answer your question. Perhaps closed could as he seems knowledgable. Good luck.0

I think I can answer about the overheating issue as I experienced the same on my HP. According to PC world it was common for HP's to get very very hot. They also said that this is one of the reasons why they stopped referring to them as laptops - which is funny as they have started referring to them as this again. IMO the overheating is NOT something that should happen as mine also got so hot it burned my leg and eventually stopped working, perhaps you can push that point. I have to say though that thier repair service is pretty good. They pick it up from your house and drop it off when it is repaired. I dont know what other experinences are but they had mine back before they estimated which was nice.0

If it's getting that hot, there is something seriously wrong with it. co-incidentally my son bought a Tosh laptop from the same retailer and it ran very hot - it kept crashing and blue screening - does yours do the same?
We got the run around with them saying that it was the AMD chip which ran hot, and the Intel chip ran cooler. Eventually I escalated it and got a refund, and I think that you should do the same.
The most important thing is your photos - have you recovered them now? if not I wouldn't let PC World anywhere near your machine and I'd avoid switching the machine on. If you've got the photos, return it and ask for a refund - you won't get it, but then you can reluctantly agree on a repair - I'd be surprised if they fix it, I'd then test it and if it still gets hot, return it and insist on a refund. If you want to really test it, run something that's graphic intensive like playing a DVD.
The laptop I'm currently using is running very cool and I can hardly hear the fan running.0

            Op has two choices.
1 return to pc world and all hope is lost
2 these issues are normally a sign of overheating caused by being used as a laptop, I.e. User has been working object on knee or other soft object. This causes fluff to block air vents, hence cause said trinket to overheat. Suggest a quick run over the underneath with a vacuum attachment to clear holes. Then boot the object up, on a table or other none soft furnishing object.
Then you may have to boot in on last known good profile. More help may be available on the teckies geeks emporium or the techIe bored of this parish0

Can i please state for the presumptious amongst you,
I dont operate, nor have i ever operated, this laptop-on my lap...
For the simple reason, as stated in the beginning, this problem has been obvious since i BOUGHT the damn thing, and therefore, being fond of the skin on my legs, its been sat on its own little plastic desky thing with fans in it, on top of a coffee table. RAISED UP with ADDITIONAL fans, and STILL gets so hot it caused a blistering burn to my little finger one day when my dog upset the table and i had to grab it.
So i think we can rule out the fans being blocked with fluff, unless glass and plastics are manufactured differently to the way i first thought.0
