righto, got my photos off that i hadnt backed up, just music really now, i cant remember everything i had on the desktop (where i store my word and notepads lol) so that lot will be gone that isnt backed up (doubt theres much of interest/necessity anyhow).
Problem im having is when i search for music i can see it there but it is stating that it is corrupt. Any ideas how i can get around this? thanks.0

Mind me not to give advice about going to the Techie Bored that may had sorted your problem, instead hey, just lay your rights down.
Then if you had gone and read my first post, someone may had helped you get you data off, but ...
Oh, as for being a near newbie, please remember to be nice, but again, that is why you are ... stuck with a dead lap top and me, not.0

            it's board, not bored....
oh and if you can READ, I got the data off. I posted words to that effect above, you were obviously too busy criticising my grammar to read that. And the laptop has been put in for repair.
I dont care how new I am here, I have been on enough to see your answers are rarely constructive.
Thanks to those who genuinely helped.0

Sent a laptop to PCWorld for repairs after a cup of tea went over it. Nothing wrong with the hard drive but they swapped it out anyway and returned it along with the laptop. Just needed to fix it in a hard disk usb caddy and had a spare drive.
If they do this with yours you may be able to do the same. If you have difficulties then your local independent computer store may be more help - but get recommendations. When I took my newly spare HD to my indi store they sold me the usb caddy for about £12 and fitted the drive for free but they didn't need to do any recovery.0

OP: in part, you're on the wrong forum.
You need to Google 'Hewlett Packard customer complaints': HP's quality control in recent years has been anything but satisfactory -- I seem to remember a Class Action was in the process of being launched in the States earlier this year.
I don't know whether over-heating is / was one of the issues, but you'll do yourself a lot of good by being armed with as much information as possible, because if the hard drive failure is not related to the over-heating, then as like as not you're going to get back a repaired laptop with a potentially dangerous heat problem.0

Dear OP, there is a techie stuff forum here which may get you more info, but for what it's worth here's my 2p...
Laptops should not run that hot. If it can burn you, it is too hot to be working efficiently and you are likely to get problems in the future (boards working lose from expansion/contraction, decreased battery life, capacitors drying out, lower efficienct overall, occasional random blue screens of death if the memory (or another part) heats beyond its tolerenced value. It sounds like bad design (nay, terrible design) or a fault to me. I would normally jump on your mention of pets to suggest pet hair in a vent/fan, but if it has been thus from day 1, it is unlikely.
If it is under warranty, send it back with an intermittent BSOD fault with a side note that it gets scalding hot (if they refuse to accept hot as a fault itself). If not, go to an independent fixit shop and ask them to take a look at it for you, maybe one of the internal fans is not connected properly, or something, or maybe it is just terrible design and a bit of a lemon (google the model number with the words "running hot", see if it's a common issue. It sounds like despite the silliness above that you got yourself sorted on the backups side of things, which is a big plus.0

Wow, at last some one who gives good, valid response without going off subject.
I'm currently using a Samsung Laptop got off clubcard vouchers which is the coolest, quietest laptop I've ever used - it also looks good too and has a full keyboard - so far I'm very impressed with it - Oh - yes Freddie et al, I've gone off subject too 0 0

Yes thanks freddie i managed to get the music back too. it ran a checkdisk a few times and came back on like nothing happened, so i got it all backed up the usual way, then handed it in to pc world.
The reason i posted here was because, as per my original post, I was asking if i have any rights to ask for a replacement due to what i consider a dangerous fault. This is consumer rights, correct?
The Tech issues popped up as i had mentioned losing data.
I primarily wanted to know my rights, however due to the tangent this went off on I contacted consumer direct and they advised me to let PC world look at it first, then get back to them.
Im presuming they will come back and say there is nothing wrong. They said they will do a sink test, and also that the issue is because there is norton 360 on there and a dormant, unused mcafee scanner (which even I know wouldnt cause the unit to overheat or corrupt most of my files) So I have little faith in them.
Any consumer rights info would be appreciated.0
