Just wanted to say thanks very much for this post. I'm a newbie to this site and saw this listed and went and picked one up for my son today after having looked for a telly for him for a while.

Is there any John Lewis codes about? Could have sworn I saw a 10% off one the other day? X0

We looked at the Sony 403u series and ended up going for an LG instead - 100hz and much better 'to life' colours. My Dad did the same in Richer sounds yesterday too (it's also on offer there)
Anyone buying a tv, do go and look at then side by side, with the same HD programme or film playing on them - don't just trust the Sony badge!
I think the term "lag" is a bit misleading here.
"Lag" is a word that is often used to describe a delay - in this case it would be a delay in seeing the image in being displayed, which is a common issue with 100hz+ TVs.
I think what you are describing is "motion blur", something that all LCD TVs suffer from to some degree. This makes fast action shots look poor - such as when a the camera pans across a football pitch while following the action. If the effect isn`t immediately obvious, look at the grass, or the crowd in the background. When the image is fairly still, there will be detail in the grass, it will look like grass. When the camera pans across the field, the grass will look blurry and will lose detail.
100hz TVs address this problem by using digital processing to create extra frames artificially. This usually involves sampling the current frame and the next frame. Some clever calculations are done to work out what the frame in between the two frames would look like, before displaying the fist "real" frame, followed by the calculated frame, then finally the next frame. This is the process that introduces lag. At any one moment, the frame being displayed is not the frame being input into the TV, the displayed image is lagging behind the action, albeit only by a fraction of a second. This isn't an issue when watching normal TV, but a seasoned videogames player will notice when playing games that require fast responses. That's why some TVs have "Game Mode". This often removes some of the signal processing, to reduce the amount of lag.
I do agree with "don't just trust the Sony badge". The brand "Sony" in days gone by, usually meant that the CRT TV that it was stuck on was going to be a very good TV (due to Trinitron display technology, which Sony introduced). These days, Sony flat screen TVs are good quality, but in my experience they are often not as good as the badge might imply. Trust your eyes, but not while looking at the brand name. That's why I ended up with a Toshiba LCD, which although is now 4 years old, still produces a picture which matches many of the newer models (and it is only 50Hz, but was/is one of the best 50Hz LCDs when it comes to handling fast movement - that's why I bought it).30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. The John Lewis 5 year Warranty is a good selling point. However, most larger TVs will come with what is effectively a 6 year warranty, it's called the Sales of Good Act. The problem is that you shouldn't have any hassle if you require the repair of a 4 year old TV bought from John Lewis. If your Comet/Dixons/Currys etc TV goes wrong, and you didn't buy their extended warranty, they will "put up a fight" when you ask for a free repair. They don't want you to know about the Sale of Goods Act, they want to sell extended warranties.30 Year Challenge : To be 30 years older. Equity : Don't know, don't care much.
