I started a bookmark kit this week but I am not happy with it. Its proper bookmark aida that I am using which came with the kit - it has those funny scallop things at either side but when stitching, the bookmark aida doesn't have the usual firmness I have found aida has ? Has anyone else found this with bookmark aida ? I am thinking of scrapping what I have done and starting again on a normal piece of aida. Because there have been lots of random stitches of one particular colour (only 2 or 3 in anyone place), the back has become VERY messy which is unusual for me and I just don't feel happy with it :( the stitches sit ok but it just doesn't feel/look right ? and its awful to stitch on.

I had the same with a Winnie the Pooh bookmark I did. The aida felt sort of saggy and baggy, I can't really think of a good description for it, but I know exactly what you mean! I used backing on mine as craftygranny has suggested.

It is going to be strange when the forum's down tomorrow. Is it just for the day or all evening too? I might go down my mum's for the day, at least she'll keep the kids entertained and I can stitch :D
  • Smart thinking re the housework. Might do the same myself.

Re the bookmark i think if i'd done quite a bit i'd hate to waste it so i'd grit my teeth and finish it then put some iron on interfacing on the back to cover the stitching and give it more stiffness.

    Ot laminate it :)

Hey everyone hope you're all well? I was just wondering of anyone had done Murky Manor? Having a nosey at it on sewandso but the list of threads etc is very expensive (mostly Anchor). I was lucky enough to get a huge box of DMC threads for my christmas so wondered if there'd be much difference if I replaced the Anchor with DMC? There are some other threads listed which I wouldn't mind buying, but at 62p each for the Anchor threads I *do* grudge paying that lol! Was thinking that if it wouldn't be okay I'd just go through accrosstown but thought I'd rather use what ive already got IYSWIM?
Also I HATE evenweave with a passion, would it matter if I changed to a nice 14count dyed aida instead of the 28count linen?
Sorry for the long post lol xx

I think you will be fine converting the threads. What I would do though, is get the chart first, then as you convert each one, check it against the picture just to check that it corresponds.

I never use anchor threads unless they come with a kit, so always convert.

As for the fabric - go for it, you should always do what you are happiest with - then there is less chance of a project becoming a UFO:j

Aida band? Yup, I always find it quite 'soft' to work with.

I find putting it in the smallest hoop you can buy helps a fair bit. Also - when you put the interfacing on the back - put 2 layers on, I did that with my coasters and it made the aida really firm :)

Yes please, that's the one I was looking at! If you can give me a nudge that's be great thanks :D

I had my son's first ever school assembly this morning. It was so cute, he sat there hiding behind his hands. All the other children were smiling away, and he was just terrified, but he did manage to do his little part really well.

Spent the rest of the day looking for used cars, what a waste of time. Everything we saw was awful. I feel like giving up and living without a car. It's easy for me to say though as I can't drive anyway!! Oh well, more car hunting at the weekend coming up.

I'll be putting the kids to bed soon, then settling down to watch some DVDs and do some stitching.

no problems just send me you email details and if anyone else wants it send yours to

got loads of stitching done last night couldnt put it down and when baby goes for his nap in a minuet will do some more

waiting for my across town order to arrive cant wait all those shiney new threads

    have a good day everyone

    Morning all!
Had to get up early to go to the Drs this morning. Had a blood test done & for once they had no trouble finding a vein & I wasn't crying with pain. :j
Now I have the whole day free to do anything I want. :T Gonna make myself a cuppa & get on with some stitching. Oooh, should take & upload a photo first though. Then I can settle down with my stitching & a film. Still waiting on 3 DVDs I ordered from Amazon that should've been here on the 8th. Don't know what's going on with our post this week. Maybe our postmans new years resolution was not to deliver my shopping!
My Mum flew out to Goa an hour ago. Missing her already. In the 2 weeks she's away, I'll have written a huge long list of things to tell her!
Just remembered I was supposed to be choosing a baby design to stitch on the bib for my friend. She's due tomorrow, I think! Maybe I should change my challenge? Got 2 weeks to finish the Queen Anne House, 3 squares on the 'Cakes' and do some more Cut Thru...ah well, it is supposed to be a challenge, I guess.

Yey, I finally have my Kingfisher chart! Looks like Titanic is going to have to wait a while.

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but the new issue of Cross Stitch Gold has a subscription offer - 50% off so £22.50 by DD for 9 issues (figure you just cancel the DD after this if the price changes). Offer code is G303 and phone number is 0844 844 0388.

Also in same issue an offer on World of Cross Stitching - again pay by DD but £5 for 5 issues! Code for that is w642 - same phone number.

So tempted but just have to remember to write on my calender when to cancel the direct debits!

One last question cos I'm dying to get started on this kingfisher - can you mix Anchor and DMC threads as I have some of the DMC threads but local shop only sells Anchor or is it best to stick to one or the other? xx

My Newton Bear Bookmark was exactly the same, though it had it's own backing for me to sew on.

Some of the magazines suggest tacking it to strips of waste fabric, wide enough so it can go in a hoop.
