Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Thursday 23rd Dec. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning all
Hubby's set off to work with his pack up he's working half a day tomorrow & then has 2 weeks holiday.
My Ds came over & took me to get some cans of beer, coke, fruit juice & other heavy stuff that I didn't want to manage on the bus. So that's all my shopping done now. I finally got my freezer defrosted & the floor washed yesterday & did some cooking, I need to make some more mince pies & chocolate brownies for hubby to take to work tomorrow as gifts.
Today I need to sort out my receipts & work out how much I've spent on Christmas, it certainly won't be as much as some people.
Hugs to those in need.
Keep safe & warm everyone.
Hugs Hester

    Morning peeps

i`ve missed you all as i`ve been MIA for a few days, i lent the pc out to a relative and got it back last night :j When thats happened before i normally use the old desktop for a while but all the furniture has been moved around to accommodate the Christmas tree so its not accessible atm. The bright side is that i`m now very organised as i`ve not had my backside parked for hours at a time :D

Anyhoo i`ve probably missed loads as i`ve not been able to read either so i hope that everyone is well and ready for Chrimbo :D I have a day off today and i have two more bags of parcels to deliver, not far to go with these really so i shall don my wellies and walk. Lots of little roads to go down which won`t have been cleared so the car is definitely out.

I`m working tomorrow so i shall prep all my veg - well most of it today, i`ve already made all the yorkshires, roasties and stuffing and popped them in the freezer so that they can be reheated without any fuss. Later i shall make the piggies in blankets so that they can go in with the rest. Ironing beckons for a couple of hours later and then i need to wash all the floors downstairs. After that i think that i only have the wine to filter and then i can relax a bit before my early start tomorrow so fingers crossed that everything works out well.

Hope that you all have good days peeps - keep safe and warm :santa2:

I so appreciate my family and friends and my home. This is the best christmas present very OS as it's totally free :xmassmile:snow_laug:santa2:

Woke up early after sleeping in my own bed - how wonderful was that? Kids Dad and DD have left to go and get the last of the food shopping. I have lots of bits to get wrapped and must somehow get the toilets cleaned without being seen otherwise I will be in trouble for getting out of bed :eek::eek::eek:

Hug to all those who are poorly, sad or lonely xx
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.

    Morning :santa2:

Electrics are done, the bedroom has been put back together and the kitchen curtains now hang neatly :D

Last night, we visited a house, a very big house in the country :D A friend of ours is housesitting til tomorrow, you should see the kitchen, it's fabulous. Like the River Cottage kitchen but better. She gave us a lesson on preparing pheasant (they were hanging by the front door when we arrived). She offered us a brace but as we've never eaten it, we just brought home some breasts to taste (make of that what you will, lol). We'll have them later, if we like them we'll go back for whole birds. I always thought you plucked a bird in the direction of feather growth, not the other way round? Wasn't prepared for half-digested corn spilling out though, and the SMELL _pale_ Still, we'll know for next time :D Will wear a mask and some rubber gloves :rotfl:

Mr tru is working today, he's not happy about it because he likes to cook the gammon on the 23rd and this year, I get to do it :D I told him I won't put it on til 2pm, that way the house will be smell yummy when he gets in and he'll get to take it out of the oven, lol. He's always had to work over Christmas, this will be his first Christmas off in 20 years :j He finishes today, and doesn't go back til 4th Jan :T

I can't believe we've managed to get the house clean and tidy. I'm on my own today, so after I've sorted the animals, I'm going to pamper myself. Long hot shower, foot scrub, body lotion. Watch a film, eat some chocolate, drink some wine.

    ETA - Molly, you're home :j That's fab news :D

  • Morning All,

Up and at 'em early here this morning, waiting for the heating engineer to arrive, I've been promised first call, fingers crossed there's not some old dear whose need is greater than mine this morning. We kept the two wee convection heaters on all night, and they've done a nice job of keeping it above freezing in the house, it was11 degrees when I got up. I am just about to put a wash in the dryer which will crank it up another degree or two.

Jobs for today are food and last minute pressie shopping, I think I'll be going with my sister and leaving the OH to it here. He can wash the dishes and hoover the stairs. :) Will start the dinner prep tonight. Still haven't decided what I am cooking, but I have an idea, so I can finalise it in the shops. :)

So glad you're home Molly, I hope you have a lovely, relaxed Christmas. :D

Pollys, hope you're taking it easy too.

I hope all of you with poorly relatives get some time to spend with them over the holidays, and everyone has a good day today.

Hugs spoons and hi5's all round. :)

    Morning folks:santa2:
Hope the poorlies are feeling better. JackieG - good to hear that you were out and about yesterday. You've certainly been laid low with that stinky cold! Ed to add...see that you are up and on the go again today - way to go!!
Molly - so pleased for you that you are home. You are certainly right saying that you've got the best Christmas present!
Was too HOT last night. Can you believe it? I cranked up the setting on the storage heaters and had the output to low-ish but not right down. It's like the Bahamas :rotfl:....well until you look outside and see all the snow. haven't had any more for a few days except for a few flurries yesterday but what is here is certainly not going anywhere! Think we are in for -3 today which must be warmer than yesterday as that was the coldest day i have ever experienced!
My flylady email says to change the bed today so instead of ignoring it as i usually do (the email not changing the bed ;)) I think I'll turf DH out of it soon and get it done. He's on holiday now so I feel a little guilty but hey ho.
Need to get the last of the food shopping but have a short list and will do as soon as DH is up and ready. The road is slightly uphill but is still packed with snow and ice and i saw a car get stuck there yesterday so I'm not willing to go on my own.
My last 2 Amazon parcels arrived in the last couple of days so i hope everyone gets what they have ordered 'in time'. One was ordered a week ago on Monday and the other a few days later. They certainly are late but at least they're here!
Since moving here our dogs have slept in our bedroom (first time i've ever had dogs in the bedroom and i am totally hooked!!).Our 'young' dog (6yrs and baaaad to the bone but very sweet) has been missing from the room the last couple of nights and this morning when I came through from the kitchen she had gone back to where she has obviously taken to sleeping - on the settee:eek:. You should have seen her quick and guilty reaction when I spoke!! Little monkey.
Ok, off to have a wee browse and another cup of tea and then will get going!

  • Morning all,

Just a quick hello from me before my last day in work for 11 days :j Not that I plan on doing much today ;).

After work I'm having an early dinner with the girls, but we not exchanging xmas gifts yet as one of our friends who lives in Bristol isn't back til after xmas so we will wait til then.

Then home to put up my tree (finally!!), tidy round a bit and relax.

I plan on prepping as much veg and stuff as possible tomorrow. I did post this on the veggie alternative xmas thread but no-one has replied yet so hope no-one minds me re-posting my question on here as I know there are a few veggies:

I want to make this http://www.cranks.co.uk/recipes/view/36 but could I use a sage and onion stuffing rather than a chestnut? Would the flavours go?

    Cheers!

    Have a fab day all

Morning everyone - so glad you're home for Christmas Molly. We had snow last night - only 1/2 inch - to add to the other 1/2 inch. Would really like some more as then the children will be occupied outside making snowmen! Must get turkey out today. Have friends coming over tonight, so have got chicken casserole out of the freezer, will do this along with crusty bread, salad and maybe rice. Idea is more to have a catch up with friends rather than have magnificent food. Need to run the hoover around again today - well with two large dogs and two children, one of whom likes finding teeny scraps of paper and making them smaller - its a daily event.

Saved myself a small fortune yesterday as my christmas treat was cancelled as the beautician had pleurisy. Wouldn't wish that on my worse enemy even though I was disappointed. Had a lovely long bath last night instead. Gritters don't appear to have been out at all (I live on a main A road) and I hear on the news that Co. Durham have had their extra grit diverted to areas of extreme need! So they're only gritting 1/3 of the roads after Christmas.

Better venture outside in my jamas to get the turkey otherwise I'll forget. Love and hugs to those in need.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Molly - great to hear you are at home, take it easy.:j

Came downstairs at 3.30am. I can only sleep on my back because of my wound, but lying so long on my back is no good for my disc!:( Came down got all the cushions off both sofas and managed to half prop myself on my side and managed to get some more sleep. Feeling a bit scrunched up now so planning on a little wander round the houes, then might try a shower, my hair could do with a wash.

Warned the children that they will be expected to help with the jobs today. One job they will be fighting over is to make chocolate Krispies for Christmas Day.:)

Have a good day everyone, take care if you are travelling.
