Hiya all, made spag bol and chilli btu it just doesn't taste like it usually does. the only thing different is i've no mixed herbs so used oregano instead and used sieved passata instead of tinned toms....would this make a difference? Also how can i make it taste better....atm i really don't fancy it for my dinner and i know dh won't when he comes in. Thanks in advance.xx0

Hi, I use oregano in my bolognese & neither that or passata should make the diffference you describe. The 'fizzy' bit is what's concerning me. Usually when foods go 'fizzy', it's because they have fermented i.e yoghurt, smoothies, etc. I wouldn't eat it if you think there could be anything in there that could be 'off'. If you're sure that there couldn't be, the quickest thing is probably to shove a lot more chilli in there and hope everyone's in the mood for something hot & spicy. I'm wondering if the passata might have been off? Perhaps the container might not have been 100% sealed? Sorry, just can't think of anything else that would produce that effect. Hope you get it sorted out!2025's challenges: 1) To fill our 10 Savings Pots to their healthiest level ever

fizzy? sorry, but could the meat be off? or even the passata? i've only know things to be fizzy if they have gone off and are releasing gasses (other than pop and wine). did you use meat? when did you buy it? how did you cook it?
i'm not sure about the sweet taste though. i know when pork starts to go off it starts to smell 'sweet', so it could be that.
if you're in any doubt you should, sadly, think twice about eating it, though i do know some people that would just zap it hard in the microwave to kill nasties and eat it anyway
using oregano instead of mixed herbs wouldnt have a big effect, and using passata if you've no tinned toms is a really good ideaRelax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. The passata was sealed in a cardboard container and i only opened it just before i was about to pour it in, thee mince i bough from sainsburys and froze on day of purchase-defrosted today and fried with onion and mushrooms....think it'll have to go in the bin....i really don't fancy me, dh and our 3 year old being ill if something is wrong-thanks.xx0

humm, sounds like the meat should be fine - i do that all the time and have never had a problem with sainsburys meat.
if you still have the passata box, perhaps grab it from the bin, does it smell sweet? does any residue have bubbles in? i think foxgloves is right that its the most likely culprit.
if a shop has sold you produce that could damage your health you are well within your ethical rights to ask for a refund. i'd mention the other costs involved in prepairing your dinner aswell. i'm not normally one for the claim culture, but i've a friend born without a sense of smell, and consequently he's been food poisoned so many times! ( - and if there's something wrong with their packaging i bet they'd sooner be told now, than wait for a court case if someone got seriously ill.)Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Fizzy is definitely not good! Contact the shop that you bought the passata in and also Sainsburys, helps if you have the packaging so retrieve it from the bin - it's the batch numbers and date codes they need to check any info, washed out is fine, you can always keep a sample of the bolognese sauce in a sealed container in case they need to see it! My guess is the passata, maybe the carton had a tiny hole somewhere?Dum Spiro Spero0

Frozen mince can have a strange sweet smell, but I've never noticed a fizzy taste. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0
