Skype Out handles all the non geo eg 084x numbers I've thrown at it. Invaluable if you are abroad and need to reach such a number but also to avoid Virgin Media's maverick charges on such numbers.

If i recall correctly Skype charge about 15p a minute to call Irish Non Geo numbers plus a small connection charge. The op has found cheaper then this.;)
  • What's going on with the International Call Checker at the moment?

AbroadPhone, AbroadCall, 1pminute & 4CheapCalling are all advertising a 00448 telephone number with no connection charge? Is this true?

If they are 08 call through numbers then calls are subject to your service providers standard call set up fee. The connection fees displayed on the call checker are out of date. BT now charge either 13.87p or 15p connection depending on whether you are on an old or current tariff.
I'm not aware of any call through numbers where these connection charges do not apply.
So I would think it's a problem with the call checker.

Their were some strange access numbers showing but it appears to have been corrected.

I have drawn the attention of admin to the incorrect connection charges.

    Hey guys,

Changed to Sky recently for everything including phone line rental, & find that some of the indirect access numbers I can continue to use without being charged by Sky are 1899 & 18185, via their 0808 numbers that Sky don't charge for.

However, if I use the Intl CallChecker for Sky, I'm being offered a slew of 0843 & 0844 numbers which are chargeable by Sky at a much higher rate than what is mentioned in the Intl CallChecker list. Why is the CallChecker still offering these numbers?

Is it because they are still lower than what Sky would charge if one were to call those countries directly via Sky?

The Callcheckers tell you, that can use the likes of 18185 via their Freephone Access Numbers but its not always the cheapest way on some calls.

Can you give us an example of where Sky charge more to call an 0843/0844 access number then is quoted on the callchecker please.

[Example] The International CallChecker does show BT's price for calling numbers starting 0844200 is 0.5p/minute. That is slightly inaccurate (the cost now is 0.51p/minute).

However, the International CallChecker correctly shows Sky's price for calling numbers starting 0844200 is 0.51p/minute. [/Example]

Yes, Sky appears to charge a very slightly higher price but that is not really the case.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes but the poster talks about them being charged at a much higher rate hence my question.
  • MSE's international call checker is correct to say that PLANET NUMBERS advertises that they charge 1.5p per minute for calls from a BT landline to Spain, but when such calls are placed from a Virgin landline, my bill shows that they cost a lot more than this.

The call charges per minute are 5.7p plus a connection charge of 14p. When I queried this with Virgin, their reply was "Virgin Media does not support any discount offered by the calling card company (sic)".

Can anyone shed any light on this?

    The number is a charge band g22 pg22 with Virgin 15.94 p connection 4.08 p a minute. See: http://store.virginmedia.com/content/dam/eSales/Downloads/020913-Residential-Cable-V1.pdf

If you look at the Intl Call Checker in the correct place
    http://callchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/intcallchecker/spain/virgin/easy

your see thats what quoted to call this number.Except it quotes old connection charge. Virgin are notorious for charging more to call non geographical numbers . It has nowt to do with the supplier. Virgin keep the extra revenue.
