Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Sat 18th Dec. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Morning everyone.

Can't sleep. DS woke at 4am and wanted to sleep in our bed. I tried going off to sleep in his but TBH I feel pants and can't sleep :(
Had no snow overnight and am not holding my breath on actually getting any now. It's bloomin' cold though. Heating won't switch off again as frost-stat has kicked in

Have no plans for today apart from sorting out some baking. Kids have been asking for biscuits and I don't have any :o That's assuming I can be bothered :o

Not sure about tea at the moment, not many of us in the house have appetites.

Hugs, spoons and high fives all round. Have a good day OS or not. Hope those of you lucky enough to have snow stay safe and warm.

  • Good Morning Bitsy and all who follow, well we had a sprinkle of snow yesterday and its very cold and icy this morning but I am praying that the trains are running and we get off to Liverpool this morning.I too can't sleep and though I'd just as well get up and have a lesuirly breakfast before setting off to my DDs just after 8 to pick up the tribe. The High speed link to St Pancras I am hoping will be o.k then we have to change and go to Euston I think and there hopefully we will get our train to the north.I bet the boys are up and dressed already they are so excited about this trip it would be dreadful if it went wrong.
fingers crossed we not only get there but their beloved Liverpool win for them.Sunday is my Dds birthday so I am taking her present with me at the bottom of my grip.I have packed the essentials like a pack of cards for the journey and of course a large packet of ginger nuts .never go anywhere without the essentials :):)
I hope everyone has a good week end and stays wrapped up.I am going to 'layer' myself up so I cn unpeel like an onion if I get too warm.
Hopefully I will be home again Sunday night weather permitting.
    Take care all

  • Morning Bitsy and JackieO, and everyone who follows.

I've just walked in from fetching the OH from Heathrow. Good quick journey down there, then an epic trek back via Manchester to drop one of his colleagues off. Finally got back to my car at 04:45

I'm not going to both going to sleep - I have to be at a farmers' market at 9 this morning to collect my Christmas and New Year fowl and buy the veggies for our Christmas lunch, so will just potter around until I leave. Will probably sleep later!

Apart from going to the market, I have nothing planned but spending time with the OH. He's been gone for 3 weeks in Africa and has come back sooo brown! He's going to be the conspicuously tanned person in a village full of wrapped up pale people!

Hope everyone has a good day and stays safe and warm.

    Good morning, everyone.

Bitsy - I hope you feel better soon, and that you can catch up on lost sleep.

JackieO - I hope the trip goes according to plan and, especially, that Liverpool win! I shall be keeping an eye on the score and thinking of you all.

Well yesterday, after a frosty start to the morning, the sun came out and it actually got warm enough to sit outside - the first time since 1st November, which was a bank holiday here and the last decent day we've had. By the time the sun had gone down in the late afternoon, it was back to zero degrees, and very cold overnight.

I haven't checked the news yet, so have no idea what is going on weather-wise in the UK. The severe warnings they were giving out last night didn't look too good, so I hope you are all warm and safe. At least the schools have all closed for the holidays, so that will keep the traffic down slightly.

Christmas here in France is a lot more low-key than in the UK. I know which Christmas I would prefer, though! Not many people decorate their houses so there aren't a lot of sparkly trees in windows to look at, and I really miss that. Some of the houses in our hamlet have decorated, though, and one of them has gone mad with outside lights and it looks wonderful, especially as we can see it from our house. With no streetlighting here at night, it really stands out in the dark and looks magical. The husband came to borrow our ladder so that he could hang a 'garland noel' up along the fascia (it's a bungalow) and he said he was doing it because the children wanted him to - I think he was more excited than they were!

I was hoping to have got my presents for the family back at home posted last week but, having seen the news reports about the postal problems back in the UK, I've decided to leave it until just after Christmas.

OS-wise today, I have some baking to do; a couple of Victoria sponges (one is never enough!), and perhaps a fruit cake. We're having spaghetti bolognaise for dinner, so that will be easy enough.

Anyway, off for another cuppa. Stay warm and safe, everyone.

Morning everyone - cold one here, it's -7 at the moment. Had a very long day yesterday, left home at 5.00a.m. and arrived back just over 12 hours later. Luckily the drive there and back were amazingly easy, no snow but lots of cold.

I went to bed really early last night and so am awake with the larks again, mind you I do enjoy mornings more than evenings so it's no hardship.

Staying at home is the order for today. :j As is eating out of the freezer :j and generally slobbing around the place. :j As Christmas doesn't feature too heavily in this household there's no manic organisation going on. We plan to travel north but that's probably out of the question. But wait until New Year!! :j:j

Hope everyone is OK and plans all work out properly.

Morning all - Bitsy you just gave me a laugh! Looked down the list of boards and on the Money saving in Relationships board the latest post was Am I pregnant by Bitsy! Well I had to check so I could congratulate you. Of course you were just replying to someone elses post, but it did make me smile to think of you having an extra gift so close to Christmas!

Yesterday I went into work and gave my boss a gentle ultimatum - either he pays me for November and December or I don't come back to work in January. Then I waltzed off to the last school assembly before they broke up - it was lovely and bought a tear to my eye as I noticed DS2 falling asleep on the shoulder of the girl next to him. He had to be woken up to be led out of the hall!! Bad mummy that I am I then hauled them all up to Asda in Gateshead for quick shopping - mainly things that will keep - before the snow comes down (tonight and Sunday apparently!). Then they had fish and chips as I drove home. This morning I've woken up to a light dusting of snow and its still gently falling - not big flakes, but I want to move the cars round so the little 4x4 is available just in case.

Have despaired at the holes in the bottom of both the childrens school bags - its only been 1 term. So am considering investing and getting leather satchels. What do you think?????

Today will be a day of cleaning the house until it sparkles and watching the snow fall outside I think. Christmas programs start on the TV later so I will make something easy for tea and treat them to tea in front of the TV - if they're good. Love & christmassy hugs to everyone x
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

    Morning :santa2:

We've got a bit of frost here, but no snow. Bitsy, I checked the weather forecast late last night (I know, I know, their predictions change by the hour *rolls eyes*), it looks like we'll both have some snow by 3pm today :j

Mr tru (works in Cardiff) rang yesterday to say he was on his way home because of the snow - he left work at about 10am and it took him 3 hours to get home. The roads around Cardiff were gridlocked. Made me laugh - he was going on about the snow at work, I was looking out of the window at home, we had sun and a blue sky :D

Apart from nipping to Morrisons to buy the turkey - with my free £25 voucher :j - we have nothing planned. It's been ages since we've had a day off together. That's an actual day off - no preparation jobs, no-one to visit, no "have-to's". Just a day of nothingness :D I'll throw some meat and veg into the slow cooker and have stew for tea. That way we won't even have to cook and there'll be hardly any washing up.

I woke up at 2 this morning but as hubby was reading his Kindle I didn't get up, just turned the TV on for a while & then fell asleep again & slept through 'til 6.
It's taken almost an hour to persuade the pc to work, maybe it's feeling the cold too.
No snow here so far but a very thick frost, still the milkman's been & left me a weeks worth of milk, so I can make a bowl of porridge & a cuppa, that's me set up for the morning.
OS for today will take the form of housework, washing & more houswork & yep, yet more housework.
    Keep safe & warm everyone.
    Hugs Hester

Morning all, very cold with crunchy ice underfoot! Have family christmas meal this evening:j will be lovely to spend time with my brother, sister, dad and their families. dh isn't going to come, hardly any work since november and not likely to be any til january with this weather (gardener) except for the old decos :D not any signs of christmas in this house, he is very bah humbug :o , I know it's hard when the others can buy things as they have two incomes and we only have his (I have health probs) but to be honest if I could fix my health and work that would be great:D but the only thing I'd change as I love my os lifestyle and the characters it brings me into contact with. Right off to make a picnic blanket with some old fleece blankets, no not gone mad and going to picnic in the snow :D it's part of ds1 &partners prezzie to go with their picnic hamper so they can os days out when the sun shines again next year. Have a good day everyone:D
