car accident & drink driving

I've just had car accident and unfortunately ran into the back of someone on the slip road of motorway, I was breathalysed at the scene & the results came back that I was just over the drink drive limit. I was then taken to the police station for further tests; the breathalyzer machine in the station was broken so I had to give a blood sample which took quite a few hours for the Dr to arrive. I told by an officer at the police station that it will take 6/8 weeks to get the blood test results back. In the station it was suggested that I should not worry too much but not to tell my insurance company of this situation re being breathalysed and over the limit, then having the blood sample taken. Has any one else been in a similar situation that can share their experience?

Thanks

  • I wouldn't say anything until the results come back. You may end up not being over the limit and if you do not get any points then there is nothing to disclose.

read your policy, if it says you have to tell them before being convicted then tell them, if not keep your mouth shut as nothing good can come of volunteering un-required information to insurance companies.

I'd get your sample analysed too, that result will come back much quicker and you'll know where you stand

If you are insured with Admiral, you won't be covered anyway - one of my work colleagues found out this week that if a customer of theirs is involved in drink or drug driving, the policy is null and void if they are convicted - and they won't pay for any third party damage either.

    Scary.

I was also going to say that you probably won't be covered if you're over the limit.

    Troll alert.

Surely no one in their right mind would come on here for reassurance after being stopped,, breathalysed and found to be over the limit.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Why the assumptions that the OP is a troll?

I think you are probably on safe ground if you were just over the limit on the breathaliser test and had to wait "several hours" for the blood test.

The length of the wait seems very strange. I would take the sample they gave you and take it to a lab yourself.

Check your policy document for what you have to notify them of.

the not paying third parties is nonsense which throws doubt on the rest of the post

I have no sympathy for you what so ever !

You chose to take a drink and then get in the car and drive home !

I hope you get the punishment you deserve !

Well I thought that too, but he rang and asked the question again, and was told the same thing - as was my manager, who is also insured with Admiral.
