On a similar note, I got a new car on Wednesday and the tax is up at the end of December. Is there any way I can tax the car if I don't get my insurance paper through in time?

You can do it online as long as your insurance is recorded.

Thanks, although my only worry would be not receiving the tax disc on time.
  • No-one has mentioned setting up a "Tart Alert" e-mail and text reminder on here.

There are several posts on this thread which might help you understand what 'on time' means in this context.

    Post #32 may help.

What is the point of a tax disc anyway? Anyone interested always checks the database to see if a vehicle is taxed (Except nosey neighbours)

So the Police can hand you a fine for not displaying a valid disc even though they already know if it's taxed or not? Just another way of screwing money out of us presumably.

Lastest advice from the DVLA on the phone just.
There is a backlog with the post, if it's not here by the 5th of Jan, ring then, but I'll be ok with the old tax disc on display to the 11th this time round, because of the weather.
Mmmm. So they've given themselves a month, as I applied on the 11th of Dec. Post office next time.

update - arrived in the post today

I didnt get a Tax Disc reminder even though it expired in March. Are they supposed to send one?

Anyway on 28th March I tried to do it online and it wouldnt work.
Tried by phone couple of times since and still wont let me.

It now transpires wont let you do it if your insurance is coming up to expiry. You have to have 2 weeks left on your insurance, and it was due for renewal today.
So I renewed my insurance today and so hoped it would finally work BUT it now takes a further week for that to get logged with the database so the phone or online system will work!
Trip to the Post Office tomorrow but its all such a pain!

Hope you have a valid insurance certificate for tomorrow, why didn't you go to the PO sooner you are risking getting fines and court appearances if you have been driving it.

P.S. I always use the PO never used online or by phone, there's something about the guaranteed "tax disc in your hand" as soon as you have paid that makes me feel any other method is just asking for trouble.

I always use my local PO too. Not only for the above reason, but also "use it or lose it".
