yes, thats what we are saying, if you order it online and it doesnt arrive. however, i was confused about whether this is even true but apparently it is
Not just 'apparently', but definitely so...

    Direct Gov says...
If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.
The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires.

    Why were you confused?

actually its not 5 days 'grace' at all - you have to buy it, however you have 5 days where you are allowed to drive without displaying it
if you dont buy it there is no grace period
And the "Most Observant MSEr" award of the day goes to.... masterlumps!

They are "grace days" and we were talking about buying online before expiry. They are even called "grace days" in the legislation.

Probably because she had never read about the new law from official sources and there was a period for the last 30 years or more where it was well known that the old excuse of "it's in the post, Officer" was not a valid excuse.

My V11 came over a week ago.

Just a thought.. but have you changed address this year and not told DVLA on your V5? (telling them on your driving licence doesn't count for the vehicle record)

What is the point of a tax disc anyway? Anyone interested always checks the database to see if a vehicle is taxed (Except nosey neighbours)

You can't use ANPR if the numberplate can't be seen, for example when cars are parallel parked.

A police officer who's on foot/bike doesn't have ANPR so has no other way to quickly tell if a car is taxed or not.

They're the two most blindingly obvious reasons.

If you can't remember and the reminder is late or missing why not put a reminder for yourself in your mobile phone/computer or paper diary?

On a similar note, I got a new car on Wednesday and the tax is up at the end of December. Is there any way I can tax the car if I don't get my insurance paper through in time?

Online should be OK so long as you have an insurance policy.

With out the Insurance Certificate a post office won't give a tax disk - I've been stung by that in the past.
