i wondered that last year when i realised i hadnt put the new one in but looked everywhere and found that this is not the case?? is this right or not. i thought the tax disc in the post thing was no true

If you apply online before expiry you get 5 working days after expiry when you can still drive and park on the street. This is a new law introduced 2 years ago.

It's all rather pathetic really, they know you are taxed but they won't let you drive after those 5 days!

too late, i always do it online. it should be ok, its due on the 29th dec, even if it comes a few days after that, i'll be fine as i just wont drive it

Puddy, just curious, how did you renew online without the reminder? Surely that has the online reference you have to quote when you renew online.

    Tax bands

Cars that qualify for each band - there's a menu on the left for other tax bands

no, it has a box for the renewal number but you dont have to put this in if you dont have it. you need your registration and your vehicle document number on the log book, thats all

Keep a copy of the e mail confirmation in your car in case you get stopped by PC Plod. Apparently you are commiting an offence and could be charged, see here >

i wouldnt drive without the current one (although i did last year as it was in the drawer), but i also thought it was the case that you couldnt say 'its in the post' but someone above me ^ said that you have 5 days grace

that article is from 2007, the poster on here said it changed the rules 2 years ago, so there may be the 5 days grace now

I haven't had reminders for two cars that need new tax from Jan.
Even worse, I bought them both online last Saturday, and I haven't received the tax discs yet.
I think they may be slow at everything at the moment.
  • actually its not 5 days 'grace' at all - you have to buy it, however you have 5 days where you are allowed to drive without displaying it
if you dont buy it there is no grace period
