It's hard to believe you used over 10 times as much as the previous year, even taking price rises into account. They're unlikely to talk to you if the account is in someone elses name though, but you can try. Somehow I can't see them being sympathetic, worth a try at least. Why can you not get through?

I would think it unlikely that your usage is more than ten times what it was in the previous year..
It could be an error when the figure was put onto the bill.
Im sure when you do get through to someone it will get sorted, be patient on the phone, sometimes it takes forever on those customer service lines.

If they still insist that the bill is correct you can have the meter checked, they will charge for this but will refund it if the meter is proved to be fault.

I have found that Pheonix are a little keen with their estimates of how much Gas you use. They roughly base it on the type of your house and how many radiators you have in it.

For instance, they estimated that I would use £90 a month worth of Gas. However, when I called them to query it and gave them my current meter reading, they worked out that I actually use £50 a month. This has now gone down due to the current 22% decrease in their tariff.

I would certainly recommend persevering on the phone to get through and query it. You should be able to read your own meter too, and remember to note the serial number of it.
  • I don't have Gas but have had in previous houses. Can you check the GAs meter reading yourself and see if it ties in with the Bill? get out copies of old bills and go through them all to double check readings and rates. (Hope you keep your old bills)

Sounds a bit much!! From what you typed it may be the case they accidently added another 8 into that figure of 188842. Could be a genuine mistake so try not to stress...

Hi What a shock for you both. I would definitely do as the other person has said(warmhands.coldheart) and also I would get in touch with the consumer council as above too. All the very best with this. Hope it is soon settled.

    :hello:

I hope someone can advise me as I am really stressed about this bill! We received a bill from Phoenix Gas a couple of weeks ago for £1057.10,  and am only dealing with it now as we have been very ill with the flu.

For the past various amounts, ranging from £90 to £134 and I really cant understand why we owe so much.... :embarasse

It states on the bill that we have used 188842 m dated 11/12/08 but last year we used 14602 m.

I have tried to contact Phoenix but cant get through. Do you think they will speak to me even thought my DH's name is on bill?

    Many thanks

    Hi Fiona

I doubt they will talk to you if your name is not included on the bill but it's still worth a try as your his wife, usually depends on the staff member you get

Goodluck when you contact them, do as others have said and monitor your own readings

One of two things is happening here, either you might be looking at the bill wrong or they have messed it up big time.

Your first step is to check the reading and see does it come close to the reading given on the bill. Or if you can post info on your bill here sort of word for word I can take a look if it's any use (I gave myself a crash course in Phoenix billing after we really messed up with it  so I know the feeling of panic)

But sadly I have to say the overall amount you say you owe doesn't sound outrageous to me - our bill would be coming in around the same amount.

Have you paid anything by DD and does it show this on the bill?

Oh and PS you do know it's a yearly bill ok? it's just the amounts you mention (£90 etc) would never ever be enough for a year...

and one more thing (sorry) you didn't get a gas fire in by any chance in the last year or so? This is what messed us up...

    At last

Out bill has come down from £200 per month to £166 per month. Yeaaaaaaaa

We had some arrears from last year when i was at home a bit more so had the heat on about 3 or 4 hours per day.

So anyone else what do you now have to pay??
