Phoenix prices are actually currently the lowest gas prices in the whole of the UK.

The company is also heavily regulated unlike the oil industry.

Benefits include instant heat, it never runs out, the ability to pay with a PAYG card, controllability, better for the environment, more modern, less space taken up in the house.

Definitely more efficient that economy 7, solid fuel and oil.
    Cheer's,
That's the thing I hate about E-7,It's what,1130pm & my radiator behind me in the living room's nearly cold,If I want to 'top up' the heat,it's the expensive 2 bar fire or freeze.(or snuggle up with the missis under the quilt....:D)

less space taken up in the house.

An oil boiler is outside whereas the gas boiler is inside, taking up more space......

You aren't a Phoenix Gas installer by any chance are you...? :D

I have the meter installed and a prepay card ready to go, only problem is finding the £££ to get it installed and with everything being so expensive at the minute thats not going to be anytime soon and I've already had £200 down the drain in oil since Nov...

Got a quote a couple of years ago to convert from oil to gas and it worked out as £1800 with all the "discounts" taken off - the majority of that was piping it from the road and a new gas boiler.
And they wanted £8 per month to pipe an appliance like a hob or gas fire regardless of useage which I thought was steep. I am not sure if the prices are the same now or any cheaper.

I am a fan of gas as I have lived in england but that conversion cost was stupidly high. However if you move into a property already with phoenix then happy days.

The other problem already mentioned is that phoenix is a monopoly and can charge what they like - at least across the water they can choose their supplier.

    24hrs a day even in this weather...

Seems to work out at around the £2,000 mark which includes the scrappage schemes £400 deducted. I had the Phoenix gas rep out a couple of weeks ago & to pipe it from the road to the house is free if it's within a certain distance, you also only get a certain time frame to get the scrappage allowance which goes to the plumber which comes off your bill & not into your hand...

Looking at a new build house at present that has gas installed, good to hear that it is working out cheaper than oil for most people as I was a bit worried when we found out the house was gas heated:eek: House includes a gas fire and cooker too these will obviously add to the expense, does anyone have a rough indication of the monthly DD for a boiler, fire and cooker ?

    Thanks in advance:T
I am trying, honest;) very trying according to my dear OH:rotfl:

We had Phoenix installed last year.

Our old oil boiler was about 15 years old, and while it was still running smoothly the controls were rubbish i.e. no room stat, no TRV's, no separate zones for heating/hot water, and a mechanical programmer with 2 basic on/off cycles per day. Two different plumbers quoted me just under £2k to install TRV's, a 2 port valve, a new digital programmer and a new hot water cylinder.

Anyways after some deliberation we had a second quote from one of these plumbers for installing a new gas combi boiler, a new recessed meter enclosure along the gable end of the house, and removing the oil tank, cold water storage and F&E tanks in the loft and the hot water tank (none of which are needed with a combi boiler), all for £2k on the button. The new boiler was installed in the bathroom hot press, where the old hot water tank used to be. The £2k included a £300 'cashback' offer from Phoenix, which is basically deducted from the plumber's bill (so we otherwise would have had to pay £2,300).

Anyway so far so good, it's much more comfortable, flexible and user friendly, not to mention cheaper to run. There's also the added benefit of no water tanks taking up storage space, and clean mains water is run to all taps in the house (not just the kitchen) instead of manky old tank water.

The only thing I would say is make sure you contact Building Control beforehand if you are changing from oil, as changing to a different fuel source (especially gas) is notifiable. It's worth having a certificate from Building Control to sell with your house should the need arise.
  • I got a letter this morning to advise that my prepayment meter is to be replaced within the next week or two. I phoned to change the date as it wasn"t convenient and to also query why it is going to take 28 days for reimbursement to reach me. Phoenix always send cheques so it will actually be another week after that before I actually get my 85.00 quid back! Anyone else got one of these letters?
