A tip to make the bearing in bread tins work longer.
If you use them normally, after maybe 100-150 loaves, the bread wears away the bearing, and water/flour gets into it - and in another few dozen loaves, it's dead.
If however you before you put the ingredients in, remove the paddle, and then put a thick wadge of butter or margarine round the shaft (oooo-errr!), then put the paddle back on, so it squishes out, it keeps the water/flour out of the inside part of the bearing, till it's formed a dough.
This means that it can't get into the bearing, and greatly reduces wear. The grease helps too of course.0 -
Thanks diflower
Have made the raisin bread today, with a bit of a variation on a theme. Had run out of cinnamon, so substituted it with 2 teaspoons of Xmas Cake Spice Mix (bought in Mr M's for 11p a couple of weeks ago). Also had a bag of apricot and raisin breakfast topper mix (50p from B&M), so used 5/8 cup of this.
Took your advice and cut into 4 pieces. Cut one up and took into work, got a thumbs up. Have bagged up 2 other pieces to freeze and will eat the rest, so yummy.
Think I would put a bit more spice/cinnamon in next time, but was still lovely. Will definitely become a regular make.
Now have a sun dried tomato bread in (cheated, as a bread mix, but have added olives). It was a 500 gram bag, so have guesstimated (is that a word!) and used 3 cups of the mix and adjusted the liquid so fingers crossed. Will be ready in a couple of hours, so will see.MSE Addiction, should come with a health warning:money:0 -

Hi guys, made a loaf of bread and now have another cooking because the kids came in from school with hubby and they have eaten most of the 1st one already! haha
Just wondering how you all store your bread as I want to put 1 loaf through the slicer later tonight, should I use special bags, foil...re-use a normal bag that my hovis was in? thanks xWhy does my dog chase cars? Even if he caught one he hasn't passed his test!0 -
Re-using the Hovis one would be fine. I bought a pack of bread-storing bags in the 99p shop, there are 12 in there but I re-use them over and over.0

Thanks Diflower, I'll use my hovis bag for now and when I go into town I'll pop into poundland and see if they have any bags alsoWhy does my dog chase cars? Even if he caught one he hasn't passed his test!0

hello there!
I am just waiting for the kids to get dressed (yes...it is nearly 1pm!) and then off to the shop to buy more flour to have a go making rolls for the 1st time
I also want to try setting the timer so that the loaf is ready in the mornings when we get up but just had a thought....if the water is recommended to be 'tepid' rather than cold to activate the yeast better it will no doubt be cold by time the timer kicks in won't it?!!
Anyone had any luck with setting it to be baked for the next morning? Why does my dog chase cars? Even if he caught one he hasn't passed his test!0 -
I almost always set it up overnight, it works fine. I did assume that it wouldn't matter if the water was cold, but it wasn't quite as good so now I use tepid.0

Thanks Diflower, gonna give it a go tonight
Well I went to get more flour and Morrissons was over twice the price of Tescos for their own brand bread flour!
I ended up buying Allisons huge 3kg bags which worked out cheaper, hopefully Lidl will have some alternative as I now can't get to Tescos because I sold my car last week.
I have the dough for rolls in the BR now so fingers crossed they will come out nice, has anyone doubled the rolls recipe as there are 5 of us so they wont last long! Why does my dog chase cars? Even if he caught one he hasn't passed his test!0 -

On another note 10 sachets of baking powder for 39p also in Lidls. I use these sachets all the time in Turkey, much easier to store and not so much waste.MSE Addiction, should come with a health warning:money:0
