in windows explorer, go to c:\windows\tasks, click on the clean system memory task, schedule, advanced, and change it from every 30 minutes to every 2 minutes, then ok, ok
in the cleanmem folder, there is a program called mini_monitor, if you run it, it will tell you how much ram is being used at any point in time, if you right click on the green box near the clock, settings, you can set it to run at windows startup
If you reboot again now, commit charge should be lower still
is the windows explorer called something else?0 -
no, it's the thing you use when you browse around the hard disk, right click on the start button, then explore
not the same as internet explorer.!!

if you cant get something to back up just yet, if you have a hotmail email account you get 25gb of free online storage attached to your emaill address (called Skydrive), if you use internet exployer you can batch upload up to 200 files at up to 50mb a file at a time,
just remember to change the upload details to original (top right of the upload box) so that it doesnt compress your pictures
also remember that uploading will take some of your bandwidth incase your ISP impliments a download/upload limitDrop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)0 -
If I had no money I would understand trying to get this old machine up to speed a bit more, but seeings as the OP had set aside a decent amount of money to buy a new machine, I don't see why not...
Oh well, I tried.0 -

Oh well, I tried.
i personally dont see any problem with learning more about computers in this way, really i would love to see more people as willing as the OP to get down and dirty with their system, and as you have pointed out they still have their budget so if after everything the OP still isnt happy they can still get a new system.
also to be honest waiting is the best thing at the moment since Sandy Bridge is due out next month plus the new graphics cards from both the nVidia and AMD, which should change the market place somewhat.
and if the OP gets comfortable enough with this they might want to look into building a system as well, and they will also be well set up for their next system as they will understand more about system maintenance.
really what is so wrong in showing someone what can happen with some maintenance, and if it does prolong the life of the system by spending £5-10 on some new RAM and spending a few hours going through things what is the harm?Drop a brand challenge

Go gonzo, I'm all for having a go, as I put in my earlier post.
It took me 4yrs from knowing dead zero, being given a Win98se pc, uprating it and reading stuff on here, to being confident enough to have a go at most things.
Now with running my self assembled part old, part new, Win7 64bit and E6300 with a bit of overclocking, and dual booting with Ubuntu 64bit.
And I'm over 50.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
