D'oh, not much of an IT department there! Still you can pick up 2x256 MB PC133 on ebay for under £5. That would help enormously.

You should still look at closed's advice about trying to remove all the accumulated programs that run on startup as that will improve performance with or without the extra memory.

I've still got an old P3 1.1GHz machine at work that runs perfectly well, admittedly as a secondary machine, but it starts up in about 2 minutes and runs most software without being noticeably slow.

physical memory (K) total= 253424 if thats the same

i have a speedtouch router with 2 green lights one usb and one adsl

Thought so, you have double the ram 256MB you thought (128), so perfectly feasible to get this running like new again if you follow the instructions.

i had set my mind on buying a new pc but now i am curiouse to see how well this pans out as i love a bit of diy and to be honest ive never done anything other than switching this pc on and off
now i have to work out how to back up.

double the ram hows that then ive had it from new and its only been repaired once when the power pack died.

Did you lift the 128 spec from a website?

External usb hard drive is the easiest way to backup, around £35 for a portable drive
