    uninstall avg

    install avast 5 free

    control panel, regional and language options,languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

    to start with

    are you using an ethernet router or a usb modem

    isp = tiscali or tesco?

    physical ram total in task manager?

    I've still got an old P3 1.1GHz machine at work that runs perfectly well, admittedly as a secondary machine, but it starts up in about 2 minutes and runs most software without being noticeably slow.

    sorry about delay pc is in snail mode at the mo in task manager i dont have physical ram but i have
    physical memory (K) total= 253424 if thats the same

    Thought so, you have double the ram 256MB you thought (128), so perfectly feasible to get this running like new again if you follow the instructions.

    i had set my mind on buying a new pc but now i am curiouse to see how well this pans out as i love a bit of diy and to be honest ive never done anything other than switching this pc on and off :o
    now i have to work out how to back up.

    double the ram hows that then ive had it from new and its only been repaired once when the power pack died.

    Did you lift the 128 spec from a website?

    External usb hard drive is the easiest way to backup, around £35 for a portable drive
