I'm with the OP following closed's advice.

Worst case, he spends a bit on sdram, the PC goes on a few months, but he/she will have learnt a good deal from the advice given here, and being a diyer will find it straightforward. ;)

For the record my website runs 24/7 off a Gateway 500Mhz P3 (no cpu fan) maxed out at 512Mb (mobo spec says 256MB).

That made me laugh as i am a gardener for a private estate:rotfl:

Yup there seems to be the assumption on here that everyone sits in a warm office, chatting to the secretary and drinking coffee. :p

Though -7.0 C was nippy out on site the other morning .
    Move along, nothing to see.

I think i got this right as the numbers keep changeing

    total 608820
    limit 753208
    peak 675388
this was last nights peak commit result and after following closed's two simple tasks this is what they are now.

    total 252676
    limit 633440
    peak 269440

to a gardener it doesnt look like much but i really cant believe the difference this has made to an ageing pc:j

now i just need to get a back up device or some more discs to save our pics.

Shoping will be saterdays priority job as we live 20 miles from our nearest town, no point ordering one as we cant get next day delivery at our postcode due to the backlog up here in sunny Scotland.
no need to buy bulbs as we have 5000 ready to go out;) we plan a head here.

in windows explorer, go to c:\windows\tasks, click on the clean system memory task, schedule, advanced, and change it from every 30 minutes to every 2 minutes, then ok, ok

in the cleanmem folder, there is a program called mini_monitor, if you run it, it will tell you how much ram is being used at any point in time, if you right click on the green box near the clock, settings, you can set it to run at windows startup

If you reboot again now, commit charge should be lower still
