before i do anymore i have 7 years worth of passwords which i cant remember as they are stored in the pc, i also have family photos would i be best saveing them before altering anything.

do not do the reset IE to defaults bit, and do not run ccleaner

to protect passwords, photo's should be fine, but it would be a good idea to burn them to cd or buy a usb drive asap for backup

Whatever you do, don't move the photo's to a backup device, copy them so you still have the originals

You could do with a wireless adsl router to get the best out of the laptop, and also to free up some ram on this pc (assuming it has a network card).

Swapping virus scanners won't affect your photos or passwords.

mainly websites i dont do internet banking other than paypal,
ive had nothing but bother trying to burn them hence still on pc,
its mainly the pics that im bothered about everything else is retrievable with a bit of time.

What was the bother, which program did you use to burn?

Got any usb flash drives, external hard disks, mobile phones or camera's with memory card and usb connection? You could also upload them to the web, flickr etc

If you are prepared to spend a few quid pc world etc sell usb hard disks for £35 upwards

Does it say DVDROM only on the drive, ie is it a CD writer too?

right removed avg and loaded avast and it is now scaning registry and has come up with 1388 faults,
