  • I might be able to clear this up for you all. Firstly, let me say that in a previous life (7 years ago, lol), I was teaching and examining advanced driving in the fire service. Derrick, you have failed!

In this country we drive on the left, and we also number lanes from left to right. On the road where Derrick says the markings are wrong, it is obvious that only one lane can continue, so this will be lane one. Beyond the arrows, the remaining single lane will be lane one, not as Derrick would have it, lane two. The markings clearly show that lane two will end, therefore traffic in that lane will have to merge with lane one. I find this straightforward and not up for negotiation. If the police agreed with Derrick, then they are wrong and the Highways Agency are correct.

Regarding undertaking, this is clearly only acceptable when traffic is moving in queues, and no other time. An advanced driver will read the road well ahead of most other drivers, and will anticipate what the other vehicles are likely to do, and react accordingly to avoid any conflict. This can include straddling both lanes on approach to a bottleneck, thus avoiding vehicles being alongside when the road narrows to one lane.

Let me try and be a bit more simplistic, as the Google view does not give a complete drivers eye view,(the kerbside moves towards the centre of the road therefore removing most of lane 1).

To continue in lane 1 means a tug on the steering wheel to the right then to the left to be able to stay on the road and not mount the kerb.
To move as the arrows suggest from lane 2 means a tug on the steering wheel to the left then to the right then again to the left to continue on the road.

But from lane 2, you need to make no tugs on the steering wheel as you will continue to stay to the left of the centre road line.
So why would lane to have to do a double chicane maneuver from lane 2 when there is no need for it, leaving lane 1 to make the single chicane maneuver to stay on the road.

The kerb on the left, the centre line on the right are parallel that is lane 1. If it bends to the right or the left it is still lane 1, If lane two carried on it would remain parallel and bend alongside lane two.
A straight line does not give you right of way. Following your method we would just drive in a straight line from A to B!
I think its time you put the shovel down Derrick!

But it doesn't, lane 1 runs out of road, lane 2 remains parallel with the centre line until the kerb bends to the left a couple of hundred yards down the road.

The only other way I could describe lane 1 is that it has an offset in it, i.e. from the kerb out to the right then back to straight.

Lane one doesn't run out of road as demonstrated by the Audi driver

Your video proves lane one is consistant and infact lane 2 has to merge.

Regardless of the audi's "undertaking" manouvere he was still correctly positioned.

Highway code always states to drive in the left lane unless over taking blah blah

The kerb and white line are parallel on lane 1, it is lane 2 that narrows.

As I have said, until you drive the road you cannot see that the Audi driver has had to do 3 tugs on the steering wheel, (albeit minor), anyone in lane 2 does no tugs, as explained above post #224

Take the arrows out of the equation,(like today as they can't be seen because of the snow), and the road give you my driving route.

Lane 2 looks to me like you'd have to have a tug or two in my opinion given the big a$$ pedestrian crossing/island
