    In the same situation If I was Derrick I am sitting behind the Toyota in lane 2. The Audi man who I as Derrick believe is a tit, is behind car in lane 1. Derrick uses this road often, knows it merges to the left! Being an advanced driver believing the Audi man was a tit, would it not have been easier and safer to let the Audi get ahead of me and merge behind it? Or is there a reason I have to be there first?

    they wouldnt get to me through the traffic as they arent aloud to overtake on the left

    of course you can over take on the left

    You cannot overtake on the left! I posted the section from the highway code!!! The very standard to which all drivers must drive in order be granted a license to use said roads!

    Emergency vehicles can overtake wherever they like, that's what they have the bleedin sirens and flashy lights for!

    Im seriously worried that people seem to think overtaking on the left is the "norm".

  • it says in what you posted that you can go past if the other lanes are moving slower or they are congested

    i suppose really it means you should go from right to left then back right again in and out shake it all about style

    i quite often find my self in the lane with the truck doing 50 - 60 past the other lanes on the m25 as truck drivers know how to drive by leaving large gaps so you dont get all the break dancing phantom breakers so i just sit between the trucks

    You can not over take on the left but you can pass

    HWC 163

    "Stay in your lane if traffic is moving slowly in queues, If the queue on your right is moving more slowly then you are, you may pass on the left."

    But passing is not overtaking!

    ^^ Nope, but you'd last about 10 minutes before the Police jumped on you.

    Might take longer than 10 minites tho.

    If everyone is moving at 4 mph. They should only pass you at 14 mph.

    The good book tells them only travel at 10mph quicker than the slowest moving vehicle when traffic is slow or stationary.;)

    so if i drove down lane 3 at 4mph no one is aloud to overtake me lol

    You would then get pulled over and charged with careless and inconsiderate driving

    That is assuming that the road was clear and there was no reason for you to be doing 4 mph.

    What is 'Careless or inconsiderate driving'?

    A person drives carelessly or inconsiderately when the way they drive falls below the minimum acceptable standard expected of a competent and careful driver.
    Some examples of careless driving are:
    • overtaking on the inside;
    • driving too close to another vehicle;
    • driving through a red light by mistake;
    • turning into the path of another vehicle;
    • the driver being avoidably distracted by tuning the radio, lighting a cigarette etc.
    Examples of inconsiderate driving include:
    • flashing lights to force other drivers to give way;
    • misusing lanes to gain advantage over other drivers;
    • unnecessarily staying in an overtaking lane;
    • unnecessarily slow driving or braking;
    • dazzling other drivers with un-dipped headlights.
    I all have learnt is from others on many sites.

    I think you are seeing all this bluster and argument in the same light as me. :) The machoism is there for all to see throughout.

    The first incident contained a driver pulling out in front Derrick. He clearly shouldn't have done so, but Derrick was intent on accelerating past for no great benefit in this built up area with traffic lights ahead.The minor road rage started.

    At the next set of lights, you can see Derrick is trying to win the trophy by accelerating to stay ahead of the Audi. However, the Audi driver smarting from the previous horn blast, senses his sweet revenge and spots his chance to cause some problems, so he zooms recklessly up the inside of two vehicles.

    It isn't really about the road signs, lane discipline or markings. This was a minor road battle about reaching a desination one car in front of the other for no good reason.

    What we can always be sure of is that many driver's put huge store in being ahead of another to reach their destination at least a few seconds earlier than they might have done.;)

    The risks are generally not worth it, nor the raised blood pressure.

    I wouldn't have done what Derrick did.
    Once your ahead of traffic in the left hand lane, they are supposed to give way, this is why you shouldn't ever need to indicate when changing lanes to the left on the motorway (altough in practice it's difficult). It's also why you should NEVER overtake up the inside. So in the above i'd have moved left as soon as I was ahead and allowed the Audi driver to slam into my rear end if he really wanted to.

    So that was you in the car then?
