Thanks folks just seen this - will email the techies to see whats going on.

As always it would be helpful if you informed us

    A. Are you using main site or forum and what error message you get
    B. What operating system you are on
    C. what browser you are using

Thanks (its working fine for me righ tnow)

Its still slow now - and I'm struggling.

    a. I'm using the Forum each time it happens - dont know how main site is.

    b. The usual error message is the one that Internet Explorer cant get through standard webpage (cant recall exact wording - but its the one where one can push for it to do a diagnostic procedure as to what the fault is).
Got Vista 64 bit p.c. if that makes any difference - dont know - as I'm so computer-illiterate ....

    c. Browser - Internet Explorer.

Right at this moment there are approx 2,000 members/guests viewing the Forum - which I wouldnt have thought was that many people comparatively speaking for MSE - but had that circle going round and round for a while (the equivalent of the timer - ie I'm waiting...I'm waiting symbol). That was after getting to the Forum as normal and then going to click onto a second thread I wanted to read.

Ok it looks like some of the guesses above we're right - much of the slowness is related to the attacks on other sites. We received this from our server company yesterday....

"As you may be aware there is some disruption around the internet, as you may have seen from the press. Some ISP’s and network providers are experiencing issues due to large volumes of traffic generated by targeted attacks on certain internet sites.

We are working with all our providers to mitigate potential disruption as much as possible and we are aware of traffic abnormalities with some of our upstream providers.

We will keep you informed as and when more information becomes available.

    Thank you for your patience."

    Makes sense then.

Must just be a bit of bad luck for MSE that the routing to your hosts etc is getting hit. Other sites that I've been on don't seem to be suffering the same.

    Thanks.

:DI thoughta so....go me:D:j..I sorta like a bit of proof that ceridwen gets it right once in a while..:rotfl:

I felt sure that at some level this must be the reason behind MSE's current problems - though I'm far too techno-illiterate to be able to explain why.

Fermi - you and I make a good team here. I realise what direction to look in and you've got the technical knowhow and ability to understand the way I put things to go find it:beer:

Reet - I'll head back to the cyber battlefield and watch which side is shooting hardest now....<swears visibly - as I hate wars, but this one is exerting a sorta "gotta see whats happening now" thing to me>....but both "sides" are at it hammer and tongs and I'm picking up the general drift of what is going on..

My feeling is you're right on that fermi - and we mustnt forget MSE IS a huge website - so probably much bigger than any other sites you visit (whether that means MSE is more "exposed" to any stuff going in its vicinity - ie the servers - perhaps because it takes a lot more server space to "serve" the site???). Again - I'm up against my very low level of techno-literacy to explain what I mean...
