Hi, this is the Daily thread for Wednesday 8th December 2010 . This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as wel

Morning peeps

hope that everyone is well as i`ve missed as few days and although i managed to read parts of some days i`ve not really got any chance of catching up :o

The last week or so has been mostly spent shovelling snow and has been all bed and work. A lot of walking has been done extending my working day beyond the level required for sanity and i`ve basically burnt myself out both physically and mentally as work has been very challenging due to the weather.

Anyhow, i`ve been given a days leave today to catch up on my sleep so once i`d eaten i settled down on the sofa in front of the telly and this is where i woke up an hour ago so i`ve basically slept for about ten hours and it feels so good not to be struggling to keep my eyes open.

I already have the washing machine and dishwasher on - the hot water is on too and i plan on cleaning the upstairs and catching up with things that are normally done everyday, i`m not going to kill myself doing it all though as i have some leave next week and the rest can be done then.

I also need to write some Christmas cards and get those posted and make a list of pressies that i still need to buy. We have had post delivered for the first time in a week yesterday but only mainly junk mail and not any of the important things that i`m waiting for, i really feel sorry for the posties out there as they have lots to catch up on and the conditions for walking are shocking. Many places are inacessible and last night we had some more snow

My little car has been off the road for a week and today i plan on running it on the driveway for a while to warm it up and get rid of the condensation inside, its still not safe to drive to the main roads but hopefully by the weekend we shall get a bit of a thaw and some more ice will disappear. I`ll be out later chipping away with a spade to give it a helping hand.

I have jars to label and food to make (thank goodness for the freezer) so i`ll mash another cuppa and have a quick browse then i`ll make a start.

Sorry for the ramble :o:D

Hope that you`re all happy & healthy & full of beans.

Have a fantastic day peeps.

Planning on starting the GC again soon :p

Sunny day - good morning - hope that you've gone back to bed now though!

Morning everyone - still dark and cold out, but couldn't sleep past 5. Am trying to continue with my postive feelings - although its VERY hard when my boys have been screaming the place down. Have used the last half hour to write down everything I'm worried about and then what I can do to make each situation better. There are several things that I can't do ANYTHING about, so when the children have gone to school I'm going to take the piece of paper outside and burn it. Apparently seeing the paper go up in flames is supposed to help - according to the books!!!

Last night I printed out letters for the children from Santa - I just googled free letters from Santa and came up with loads of options. Have printed them onto red card, cut them out and placed them by the front door. Managed to get a few things cleared away yesterday - but more importantly (due to probably more snow) I managed to go shopping and stock up again. Heres hoping that I've got enough of most things now to last until just after Christmas as I don't see much christmas spirit in the mad dash round the supermarket!

Today have appt with Doctors where I'm seeking to get DS1 referred to CAMHS, then I'm going to go do a bit of sneaky snooping around the psychiatrists (spelling?!) that OH goes to. Then off back to school to have meeting about DS1s behaviour. So after a morning like that I think I'll put on my wellies and take the dogs for a walk in the snow. Work will have to wait. Dinner tonight will be mince / chilli wraps and then I'll have a go at making soup - carrot & orange I think I have a recipe for. Also want to make leek & potato.

Have decided to stick to DS1s routine and not put him in the xmas play tonight at school. He was on stage yesterday for a whole 30 seconds out of 30 mins. Didn't say anything and was then led away back to the classroom. Think its asking a bit much of the TA to come in after hours for just 30 seconds when both myself and OH have seen the play. Will have to think of something to take his mind off it instead.

Have a lovely day everyone - hugs for everyone today - will help keep you warm. Sorry for the long post, but talking to you guys helps keep me sane xxx
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

    Hi everyone.

Sunnyday - I hope you manage to get some time out for yourself just to chill and recharge. Sounds like life has been a real challenge for you.

Esmf - I hope your worries have been helped by setting fire to them. It's horrid trying to come to terms with things that you can do nothing about. I agree with you about the school play. I think the schools expect a lot at times, and being on stage for just thirty seconds is not very fair, is it?

Well, luckily we don't have the UK's bad weather here. It's still very cold but we've only had a small amount of snow. It has rained almost continuously for two days - horrible, I know, but not as disruptive or dangerous as the snow and ice, so I'm not daring to complain. At least we can get out and about here.

OS-wise, dinner tonight is a roast so that I can use up chicken legs that have been in the freezer for a while.

I really welcomed all the kind words about my BIL. He has been home from hospital since Sunday, and he and my sister have had a couple of days to chill out and relax, after the anxiety and dashing around of the previous three weeks. He is up for seeing people now, so they're having an open house today. I just wish I wasn't miles away here in France, so that I could go and visit, too. He is feeling a lot better having had lots of sleep and some of my sister's great cooking. He is still obviously hoping that he can have a biopsy soon, so that at least they all know what they are dealing with.

Well, I'd better get DH out of that warm bed. A nice cuppa should do the trick!

    Have a great day, everyone.

Cold here, but at least the car was clear. DW has been emptied & reloaded, hubby has been dropped at the station with his pack up, I'm taking leftover cottage pie. I'm out tonight so only need to sort hubby out with tea.
I gave a child at school a scarf as she has a sore throat & due to family problems isn't dressed properly for the weather, it took her ages to grasp the concept of the scarf being a gift then rushed around showing it to everyone, she also asked a staff member to help her write a thank you note, there wasn't a dry eye in the place.
    Keep safe & warm everyone.

  • Good morning all

Can't see out yet to see what the weather's doing out there yet cos it's still dark. It feels mild though. Thought that yesterday too, until I went out togo to work. It felt like the coldest morning yet. It was -5 degrees according to the car & the frost had superglued itself to the wind screen- it really was refusing to budge. I hope there won't be a repeat performance today.

Off to work in a bit - some days I resent the time I spend there when there's so much to do at home. I suppose if it wasn't for work though, I probably wouldn't have a home, so should look on the bright side.

Left over chicken & veg n gravy for OH tonight, not sure about me yet. Will also make a few mince pies with some pastry that's lurking in the fridge & needs using up.

Almost finished my first attempt at hampers. I am doing 2 - 1 for DSS1 who is in his 1st year at uni - his is based on store cupboard essentials & student recipes. Not very glam but I reckon he should be cooking more for himself. He rings up sometimes to ask what he should buy for, say, bolognaise & from what he says its clear his repertoire is quite limited, I think he wants to try but just doesn't have the confidence or knowledge, so I've included a studenty cookbook. Hoping he will want to come over in the hols & try out a recipe or 2. We did try to get him learning during the summer, but most of the time he was otherwise occupied with his laptop, play station etc etc!

DSS2's hamper is based on hot chocolate, milkshakes & all the associated goodies. He is a choccoholic & like his father guzzles milkshake like it's going out of fashion.
Am hoping to get these finished & cellophaned this weekend, then we can have a good titter at my efforts!

Hope everyone has a good day x

    Morning everyone.

Yesterday was a good day - dishwasher installed :j and car has been dug out by friends :j Not sure I'm going to use it yet and the roads are still treacherous, especially the local ones, and more snow is forecast. I'm meant to be going to Sheffield today but will cancel and do a Skype meeting instead.

OS is full steam ahead here - more stuff pulled from the freezer and being used up well. Today will be sausage casserole as I found some lovely Cumberland sausage, from the fab farm shop on the way to Hexham, lurking at the bottom of the freezer - more :j

Hope everyone is doing the best they can and keeping warm.

    Morning:santa2:

    Aw Hester, that's lovely :)

I seem to have made more work for myself :D I took out an extra bit of wall, so the dust has returned. Have just learned that copper pipes have to sit in a chased out wall and be covered over before rendering - I thought we could just render over them, but no. We haven't got time to do that now, so we have to cut them off then replace them when the plasterer has finished.

Mr tru has a doctor's appointment, then a visit to the vet with Boris - he's gone downhill again  I'll give him his painkiller in a mo, a few drops on a basil leaf. It's the only way he'll eat it :D

Today I'll be emptying the rest of the kitchen cupboards, then removing a couple of them to smash off the old plaster. Should be easy, it's so old that it's practically peeling itself off the walls :D

Oooh a hen night - I'll bring the Bacardi :D

    Morning all

Icy and very chilly here this morning. Dinner last night was fish for DH and myself, had some salmon which I really enjoyed as it's one of my favourites.

Just have to work until lunchtime today then my working week is finished but I've got lots to do, mainly wrapping of birthday/xmas prezzies as DS1's birthday tomorrow and of course the boys only have next week left at school.

Dinner tonight will be LO's from the fridge. DS2 has his school xmas disco tonight, at least school is just over the road so not to far to go. Hoping the office is warmer today as it's been so cold during the cold weather, somehow I doubt it though, I have put the extra layers on so can't really do anymore.

Forecast says we could get more snow today, we haven't had more snow for quite some time, just what we did get didn't particularly thaw and then the frosts have been so cold that it's welded to the pavements/roads.

Really looking forward to having some time off between Xmas and New Year, want some away from the normal routine, feeling abit low again at the moment, once I get xmas shopping finished and feel a bit more organised hoping this will lift. I shouldn't feel low as I know my situation is not so bad compared to some, so onwards and upwards.

Not much else to say really, keep safe and well everyone, hugs to those that need them.
