    Well said.

Watch the TV on Boxing Day and watch the News to see the eye-glazed queuing to buy cheap crap.

You mean watching someone else having to work on the tv stations? Surely we should just shut down all radio, tv, and every other form of work for those two days ;)

At the end of the day if you don't like the job find another one that doesn't require you to work those days.

    ^^This!

I'm amazed people are complaining about the working hours at the busiest time of year. Surely just having a job during the current economical climate should be something to hold dear?

  • As a nurse who has worked either Christmas eve night, Christmas day or night shift, or Boxing day shift for most of the last 20 years (I got one year off on mat leave, and one when I was admitted for emergency surgery on Christmas eve!!) I find this thread mildly amusing. As a student nurse I worked in my local Sainsbury's in addition to my nurse training, and so worked shifts as a student nurse and a cashier for 3 Christmases running, so I do have sympathy ( I still remember when we didn't open Sundays and bank hols, - thats how old I am!!)

I think the general trend is to a more 24 hour a day, 7 day a week culture, and as this marches on, these issues are going to continue.

By the way, I worked Millenium Eve at Birmingham children's hospital...my special reward (you may remember some people got paid mega bucks for working that night) ......a mug with 'I worked the Millenium at BCH' - wow!!!

    Suits me actually.

We don't watch TV on these days.

And I don't work in retail, I'm off to the 4th Jan, but I DO have empathy with other people who do have to.......................
  • I do believe they have a serious attitude problem at Asda given this post and someone else mentioning about poor service.

I am working until 5pm tonight (this being my lunch break), I work remotely for a manufacturing company. Yet our foundry finished work yesterday and most of my sales calls have not been answered, you guessed it - others in my industry have already finished. This said I am grateful for employment in this tough economic time. Yes the employers call the shots. Asda are open Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Years Day; well I am afraid that is because other retailers are. This akin to public sector workers crying about final salary pension schemes closing, when they are not available in the private sector.

My wife is a nurse and she works long hours and yes Christmas Days and New Year Days.

What about our troops, not great for them is it?

Yes I guess Asda probably are not the best employer, however there are plenty of others worse off. I am sure most unemployed people would readily swap places.

    Note:
You probably guess from looking at my other post on customer service at my local Asda store, I am not their biggest fan right now. That said I do not think Tesco are particularly that better. If I were to be unemployed again I would consider working for them, the only barrier is providing enough to cover the mortgage and other commitments for my wife and three kids. My personal philosophy is good customer service breeds good sales. This snowballing into more staff and more overtime, thus improving all the staff's wages.

Close all shops on Sundays and every Bank Holiday unless they are truly needed like chemists or true family run shops.

Yep - this is what it is almost like over here in Guernsey

There are restrictions on floor space - so our bigger supermarkets cannot open on a Sunday and definately no high street shops are allowed.

In summer when we get loads of cruise ships in, if they arrive on a sunday, if the shop wants to open then they have to get a special licence and then it restricts the hours they are allowed to open.

We have only been able to buy petrol/booze on a Sunday about 20 years ago!

Garden centres can open (but some goods cannot be sold) but ie B&Q cannot open.

So, this year, even the high street shops like Next or New Look can't open on Boxing Day for the sale (if that is when they start) because it is a Sunday.

There in only one shop open over here on Christmas Day - and that is a corner shop - they only started last year - don't know how much business they got!

Thanks, retailers, for turning Christmas into a simple day off :)

I hope you don't use any electric or Gas, I mean obviously you would want these people off these days as well ;)

If you think the supply of gas and electric (which you cannot store easily) is the same as the supply of groceries (which you can store easily) there is no point in trying to explaining to you......

    Merry Christmas anyway...............

My Dad works for the police & has to work Christmas Day & Boxing Day. My husband works for Network Rail, same applies. They dont moan though. They get on with it because its the job they signed up to do. If you dont like it, leave.
Thats quite a stupid comparison. The police are an essential service, and people need them 24/7 as people can get robbed/kidnapped etc. at any time, so people cannot prepare or delay needing the police. People know that supermarkets will be shut for 2 days so they can plan ahead, or go without it.
