    Well said.

Close all the shops on Bank Holidays and Sundays for the benefit of the staff and the saddos who can't do their shopping during the other days and nights

But the shops employ a lot of part time workers who work on these days. Are you saying they should be without a job?

There are plenty of people who may not get the time to go through the week or saturday so when are they supposed to do their shopping then?

Did you ever discover what 'our countries rules' were or are you not acknowledging this?

This is a myth, a lot of the workers in stores on these days are full time, and work all other Bank Holidays during the year - this is why it is causing a big fuss by opening on Boxing Day and New Years Day for the first time ever !
  • One of my local Tesco stores (we have three) is opening on Boxing Day and paying the temp staff the basic rate. Staff on older contracts are being "asked" to work on Boxing Day but the girl on the checkout who i got talking to said that the older staff were being pressured to come in. She also said that the temps they had taken on were mostly teenagers. Obviously so that they can pay the lowest rate. But it is possible that some of these teenagers still live with their parents. She said they were 16/17. Therefore if their rent or council tax etc isnt riding on it there is less incentive for them to go in. Throw that together with the fact that they may have to get a taxi into work (Boxing Day so no buses and definately not round here) and a youngsters wages could easily only be paying for the taxi fare. Ludicrous.

I picked up a card in my local Asda that had the opening / closing times for over Christmas and New year. That particular Asda is CLOSED on Boxing day. However, the new Tesco Extra that opened on 6th December is OPEN.

There is no reason for these shops to be open on Boxing Day etc and when staff are made to work it is even worse.

Although I can see people are focused on the stores it is worth remembering that even if the store itself is shut the warehouse is still open and they are working all through apart from xmas day itself.
Still doing the 24hr opening with anything up to 12 hr shifts.

But ASDA does give triple time for bank hoildays or 2 days off in lew so it aint all bad

  • Supermarket workers are being pressurised to work over Christmas when they don't want to. We are having a family get together on Christmas Eve. My Son has been told that he must work to 7pm that night which means that we will have to wait for him before we can go just so that he can earn another £10 after tax. Part of the reason given is that the shelves have to be stocked ready for Boxing Day.

People have become obsessed with shopping. The word "consumer" is taking on a more sinister meaning nowadays. We are becoming mindless machines,

    work-earn-spend-eat-TV-sleep.

Shopping is a drug. People are hooked. The marketeers entice us in to buy things we don't need.

Must shop Boxing Day - Why?

Watch the TV on Boxing Day and watch the News to see the eye-glazed queuing to buy cheap crap.

This, completely. I finish tomorrow at 7pm, and have to be in 8 until 6 on Boxing Day. And I don't get paid for overtime next week.

I agree shops shouldn't open boxing day, but Christmas eve is a normal working day.
