Eventually y got the washing machine working :j:j it was giving an E90 error but with help from MSE we are sorted it with a hairdryer! so no more laundrette and paying £20 to get a weeks washing done and dry , this was NOT a service wash this was me doing it!!

Oh trust me I know, it was dreadful going to the launderette, just getting all the change required is a nightmare.

I had a shared supply and the dude up the road from me had a burst and had gone away for 3 months:eek: the water board didn't want to know as i had a trickle of water so said my supply wasn't fully interupted, disgusting as it would take 10 mins to fill a kettle! Finally got the housing department to get a court order to break in and fix the dratted thing.

I had my own supply fitted after that costing £400, so I think the water board were touting for business really.

Dire experience all round, wouldn't ever want to repeat it, stops you taking running water for granted doesn't it?

Talking about water, I'm sure that I saw something on OS about adding milton sterilising solution to water if you were 'stocking up' on tap water. Can anyone else remember please? Or would it be ok if you just filled up a couple of big bottles up in case you woke up to burst pipes etc? I'm only thinking short term while this really cold weather is here. Thanks :)

There was discussion about using Milton to sterlise water over on the Preparing for Winter thread. I emailed Milton to double check the info - here's a linky.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

I'm sure water could be stored in big bottles for up to a week providing the bottles were well washed out before filling, but investing in a bottle of water sterilising tablets from the chemist might be a good idea for anybody who envisages longer term water storage. Also, to remove any doubts, always boil it before drinking it.

Keep some tinned and frozen fruit in as well as fresh; I had several instances of gazing out at the ice rink outside and back at the empty fruit bowl and concluding I wanted some but not badly enough to risk personal injury. :)

My 'Im longing for whilst I cant get out' was coffee. I didnt realise until then that I was totally addicted to the stuff (only one a day as it acts as a laxative) and was going spare not being able to get any. The other thing that I longed for was a nice chilled glass of wine. I could picture all those bottles stuffed in the snow to keep them chilled in the garden - a bit like a mirage really.

  • I've learned that cat litter is worse than ice. My nightmare neighbours in their wisdom threw loads on the path in front of our row of houses. Even after the snow and ice had gone it was like a skating rink outside. Today after almost slipping on the mess I've been out and cleared it all up.

Who was the muppet that decided cat litter was good for ice anyway? Personally I have a few bags of dishwasher salt, and leave the litter for the cat.
