...... should I tell the insurance straight away?

Read your policy and do whatever it says, mine has three sections, I must tell them……

Before doing some things e.g. changing cars
Immediately on others e.g. changing address or job
At renewal on others e.g. convictions
  • I got caught by a camera van earlier this year, doing 46 in a 30 zone - hands up, I got caught, no complaints.

Anyway, it was the only 3 points on my license, and I got the £60 fine too.

When my insurance was up for renewal I declared the SP30 and the points, and it didn't increase my renewal premium.

What it did do however, is make me be a bit more careful of my speed, as I dont want to be caught again and add any more points to my license.

^^ I learn't that I must do an emergency stop instead of trying to accelerate past people who race/close the gap as a dual carriageway merges to one lane. Hey if someone goes into the back of me and causes a 10 car pile up, it's their fault......... Right? :(

Whilst its technically their fault, you caused it. You put yourself and others at danger and put your insurance premiums up by being in a crash

When you've got 10 cars all riding 1inch from the car in front, all followed by a long procession of cars, your on the right and there are several cars behind you, the lanes merge JUST as the speed limit changes from NSL (70) to 50 and there's a Talivan behind a tree.... What choice do you have?

and the points stay valid for 3 years and stay on 5 years

Don't know what you mean by "stay valid for 3 years"??

(It may be you are thinking of the totting up situation, when only points put on the licence in the last three years are added together??)

Points are "valid" and have to stay on your licence for 4 years! (ie you can buy a new "clean" licence if you want after 4 years)

I would never have gotten it that situation in the fist place, stay in the left lane if the lanes are going to merge in to a single lane...easy.

^^ Circumstances were not as simple as it seems.... Had I been able to see the extent of the traffic i'd have been over of the left sooner, but this wasn't a so called "queue jump", there are two lanes for a reason and this happened at around 50-60mph.
