Flashed by Gatso.
I have no excuse thats valid for it, but I got flashed by a speed camera last night. I thought it was a 40 limit, but clearly not.
Having never been caught speeding before (had license 8.5 years) I'm not sure quite whats going to happen at this point (I was probabally doing about 42mph and it turns out it was a 30 limit) - would this be an SP30, or worse? I'm paranoid that as thats a fair way over the limit I might be pulled in front of a judge.
I've got my fingers crossed there was no film in the camera, I really cant afford a £60 fine right now...

3 point and £60, IF it was an active camera.
A lot of the old gatso camera's now have no film in them, the maintenance costs tend to exceed the total revenue and are therefore not normally worth it. They're moving over to digital camera's slowly, but for revenue making they much prefer the hidden mobile camera's (Talivan's).
Wait for the NIP, that's all you can do“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

unlike a lot of posters the op isnt making excuses or trying to wriggle out of a penalty so although im totally anti speeding in this case ive nothing to "moan " about. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
^^ Whats more dangerous..... Accidentally doing 40 in a 30 limit OR http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCw11k7bzuo
Which one would get caught?
The driver doing 40 of course...... “I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Cheers guys. Theres some re-assurance there. if its going to be an SP30 and a £60 fine then I wont stress too much. If nothing arrives in the next fortnight is it safe to assume I've gotten away with it?
No wriggling here at all. I've done wrong (albeit unknowingly) and I've got to deal with it. After 8.5 years with a spotless license something was bound to go wrong at some point....unlike a lot of posters the op isnt making excuses or trying to wriggle out of a penalty so although im totally anti speeding in this case ive nothing to "moan " about.
Like you I am anti-speeding as well, (hence the clean license up till now) however I've made a genuine error in this instance. I dont always agree with the limits that are in place - some of them are downright stupid but they've been placed there for a reason.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -
If you're lucky, you might be offered a £60 fine and get to go on a Speed Awareness course, instead of 3 points on your licence. I stupidly did 37mph in a 30 zone a couple of years ago and went on the course which was brilliant. It really opened my eyes and I never, ever speed now. (Previously I was a real 'London' driver - ooops!)0

Actually, another thought. Assuming I DO get points how long are they there for and should I tell the insurance straight away?Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0

Points for speeding stay on your licence four years from the date of your offence.
You need to check your policy regarding informing your insurer - most want to know immediatedly, others need to know prior to renewal.
All future insurers (usually for 5 years) need to know when you apply.0 -
tell your insurers it shouldnt make any difference to your license they arent to fussed about speed camera points but they punish you sometimes for speed trap points. not sure why
if your speedo is out like many are you might be lucky and have scraped under 40mph in which case its highly likely you may get the awareness course where you get to see grusome videos of horrible crashes.
i got flashed on a dual carriage way road that i thought would be 60mph and was doing 56 and it turned out it was a 30!!! never been there before and didnt notice any signs but there isnt any. should have remember the rule of if there is no signs and street lamps its thirty
and the points stay valid for 3 years and stay on 5 years0 -

Are you sure about that, I seem to recall it was 4 years.
