Does anyone know if you are allowed any complete days off during your employment period as I need to be away for a weekend?

As long as you can make up the hours elsewhere in the week, that won't cause a problem. Difficult perhaps if you work a 37 contract but not impossible. HTH

    Hi
I have been offered the role of census collector to start 8 April, I have looked at the page to supply my references and during the dates stated I was living abroad. Does anyone know if they will bother to apply for a CRB check in a foreign country for such a short employment contract? I see in the offer that it says if you are not formally offered the position you will not be paid for the e learning ( I have 5 days to complete this ) and the classroom training. Judging by the time it has taken them to complete the recruitment process I will have completed that way before they might tell me it is not worth going through with all that and withdrawing my offer!!!! LOL

I understand that they have to do all of the correct checks and I am happy for them to do it but I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I was thinking of phoning the helpline but usually they cant answer your questions

    Any advice welcomed
    Thanks Karen

Well after 4 months of waiting since my telephone interview........I'm on the RESERVE list!
Now, at my own expense and time I've got to complete the online e-learning, send off a passport photo and copies of Id without any guarantee of a four week job! Bearing in mind there are only 14 working days left to the 6th. April start and CRB checks are taking between 10 and 30 days to complete there's little of no chance of being ready to start on time.

For once I'm pretty speechless at the extremely poor way people have been treated in this application process. Why be told on the 23rd. November you would receive an answer within 2 weeks? What have they been doing for the last 4 months? I thought the census was a tool to indicate the progress the nation has made from the poverty of the Victorian age to the diverse popualtion and working ethics of the modern day. I bet the 1841 census was better organised than this mess:mad:

I'm in exactly the same boat - I don't know about you, but I am more than capable of doing this job. What is wrong with me? Why am I only a reserve?

I feel blackmailed into doing the 3 hours work (on top of the 1.5 or whatever it was the siftability took) for nothing. Seems to me that they've got their cake and they are eating it.

    Are you going to bother?

Well, I've just had a reply about the Non Compliance role stating I am on the reserve list too, and I haven't even had a telephone interview!

Apparently I demonstrate all the skills and experience they are after blah blah, but they will not at this stage be taking my application further?
Eh? why not, if I demonstarte all the skills and experience they want?

Mind you, this happened to me last year with another census role and they rang me up a few weeks later to offer me the job! So I shall wait and see.

In my previous post about this census farce I tried to be optimistic, but now I am furious too

I applied for the Census Enumerator and the Census Collector posts in early December. I completed the Siftability test for both of them = 3 hours in total. I then received an email for an interview for the Collector in late December. On 24/1 I got a rejection email abut the Enumerator post stating:

"You performed well when completing the [siftability] exercises but unfortunately on this occasion you have not been selected for an interview. We will not be taking your application further at this stage but it is likely that further positions will be available in the future. As a result we will keep your application in reserve and will contact you again if further interview slots become available in the future.

There were only a limited number of Special Enumerator vacancies and we received a large number of applications. Please note that due to the volume of applications we have received, with over 36,000 positions to fill across England and Wales, we are unable to provide individual feedback as it would be impractical to do so." blah blah blah....

So, I was rejected although I did well in the test (!??) but I put it down to the fact that it was not my local Council I had applied for, so maybe they preferred locals who know the area better.

Then like many others I got THREE emails (11/1, 2/2, 10/3) about the Collector post stating that they are still in the process of assessing the applications and I would be notified within 2-3 weeks or in "the near future", because "We have received over 300,000 applications".

And after all this waiting, today (16/3) I got an email informing me that "at this stage your application has been placed on the reserve list" and "It is highly likely that an opportunity will become available and in order to put your application in the strongest position it would be beneficial if you could now complete the following steps" which include to send a photo and lots of ID documents and to complete the E-learning FOR FREE
"...we will be unable to pay you for time spent completing online training unless you subsequently start work."

I though that when we completed the applications, it was stated in the job description and application stages that the E-learning would be paid for anyway. Was this the case, or have I misunderstood back then?

And from what other members write here, even if you are offered a job conditionally, then you must go to a training centre possibly at the other end of the country on your own money which you will get back IF you are finally offered the job..? Is that right? Because it doesn't sound right.

Is it even legal to be treated this way during a job application?

Does anybody know what is the formal complaint procedure about this fiasco?

There are some of us here who are lucky to have a job already, but then there are some of us who are unemployed and really need the money. Capita is a completely incompetent agency and they should pay for this mess.

I really don't think so. I did apply for the 21st. March start so it's a lot of hassle for 4 week's work which I might not get. I'm probably like most people who have time to perform this role to fit in around other jobs. I'm currently producing my next book and have some down time before the book is released in November. Previous I worked for the Police and Home Office in intelligence analyst roles (not that I'm that bright!) and thought I might just be capable of collecting the census:rotfl:Guess I was wrong!

It really is not good enough and I would also be interested to know who to complain to outside of CAPITA - they have set a very bad example on how to treat jobseekers and they are acting on behalf of the government.
