Good luck for everyone who has been offered the jobs!

I started my employment as a Census Enumerator (in Scotland) on 28th Feb but only got questionnaires on 13th March so have 13 days to deliver them all (I agreed to do 2 districts so have 911 to get through!) Went out on Sunday for 5 hours and tonight for 2 1/4. Have managed to deliver 276 so far and I can't tell you how much pain I am in.

Anyone out there who is not used to exercise - it's gonna be a rough couple of weeks!!

I didn't have any problems like the ones people are describing here. Any hold-ups were caused by my procrastination - I didn't realise that there was a finite time to do the e-learning and was chased up once it was overdue. After that I got the classroom session within a couple days and maybe two weeks after that my contract. I had a phone call today asking if I would start a week earlier (21/3) and in a slightly different area, which is okay with me. My only problem now is that I normally work 10-2 M/T/Th/F in my permanent job but have been asked to change to 1-5 so I won't be able to start at 2 in the afternoon but I'm determined I'll get past that somehow.

I really think that if you go into it thinking you're going to be as flexible as you can be (and are not expecting any job connected to government in any form to be a fantastic wagespinner!) then you're okay.

14.2 If you live outside your Work Area, you will be responsible for calculating the distance from your home to the boundary of your Work Area. This is classed as a 'commuting journey' for which you will not be paid. You will receive payment for mileage incurred within the Work Area in the performance of your duties. The ONS Expenses Policy for Temporary Census Employees provides further information on allowable expenses.

So if any of you are using your car, you'll need to change your insurance.

The insurance thing is not insurmountable, I did this the other day, ring your broker and ask for class 1b (or b1 I forget now )business insurance and tell them roughly how many miles per year you will be doing on business.

To add b1 insurance for 1000 miles was free in my case but incurred £15 admin fee for a policy change.

Four months to the day since my interview for the collectors role and still heard nothing!

Capita have had this contract for the last two and a half years and here we are, 17 days from the Census with lots of people still not knowing what is happening. This is not the way to treat people!!

    Still not heard a thing!!!

    Passed test - 10th. November
    Telephone interview - 23rd November

    Still waiting........................

Just heard from another forum that the 14th. March was the cut off for jobs being offered so it looks like our wait is finally over.

Good luck to everyone who received offers, hope the job is better than the recruitment process.
  • Hi,

I had my 1/2 day training yesterday and the trainer said that they treated the training as a final interview, so we should get our contracts in the next couple of days.

Training was "interesting", lots of contradictions, so will wait to see how organised the actual work is!

Good luck to all who are still waiting,

Had the telephone interview and also had the standard email the other day saying they were still processing applications.
Rang up yesterday and I might as well have talked to my own feet as all I got was "erm yeah, well people start on April 6th so you'll just have to wait."
They still also appear to be recruiting in my area with closing dates for applications stated as March 16th.
Not sure how they expect people to organise things round them when they are cutting it so fine though.
  • Crikey! Just been offered a collectors job, interview was 27th November! I have 4 days to get everything done. There's hope yet for those still waiting. Still in shock!
  • Hi,

Just to update my last post, I've just had my contract of employment e-mail.

    Best of luck to all,

After my telephone interview on 26 November and a very long wait, I have just received conditional offer of employment for census collector starting 6 April.

Does anyone know if you are allowed any complete days off during your employment period as I need to be away for a weekend?
