Nice to hear that other interviewers don't feel that they should go back when people refuse - it feels like harassment. At our meeting we agreed that we wouldn't pursue calls at houses where the owner had been at all aggressive and our team leader was fine with that. Many people have been really helpful - one or two, seeing me passing by, have actually come out and called me over " i missed you the other day, what did you want?" and I've met a lot of nice dogs and a parrot! Its quite creepy when the curtains twitch but no one comes to the door - i wonder if they think I am a bailiff in my fetching hi-vis jacket?

No - they probably just think you are to do with the census! Some will not have completed it and of those who did - many did so reluctantly. No doubt more than a few will see this follow up as an intrusion. Also it is entirely voluntary. If people are polite enough to come to the door (which they don't have to btw) and say no - no means no. Further attempts at persuasion constitute harrassment. And you or the ONS are laying yourself open to a charge. Those of you who are being pressured to get 100% return should remind your supervisors of that. You are also advised to take notes of any such pressure as it may help you should it come to court. You want to make sure it is the employer - not you - who is in the dock

Shouldn't even go back if they've been nice about refusing. They may suddenly become aggressive without warning (or the warning would have been when they first said no).
I consider myself to be a male feminist. Is that allowed?

Useful points Pineapple and Surreysaver. Last time i did the census ( 1991!) people were far happier about it - i still believe in its value as a historical resource but that's hardly a doorstep selling point and i sympathise with the people who don't want to be bothered.I'll try to earn my pay without upsetting anyone ( or getting myself in trouble). Fortunately we have a very decent Team Manager, so we aren't being pressured.

Anyone know if they'll issue a P45 (is that the leaving form?) automatically, or do we request it or what? Thanks.

mine were tax free. The phone calls weren't though which seems strange as I've already paid VAT on them, but they weren't itemised so maybe that's why.

Hi, I finished as special enumerator on 23rd April and my P45 came in post today, so it took about a month. I didn't request it, it came automatically. Hope this helps.
