So according to Eon I used about 44,000 kwh of gas last year so if the water was at 5 degrees c cooling it to zero would only release one fifth of this so there would need to be some thermal input in to the water to achieve sufficient heating - however it might well keep the lake well frozen on the surface - I understand that water reaches its maximum density at about 4 degrees (hence only the surface freezes) so LIR could have another income with a skating rink.

Money wise converting electricity to heat is about 100% efficient whereas converting gas is probably at most 90% but electricity only costs about 3.25x as much as gas per kwh so ignoring capital costs it would seem that heating using the heat pump would be more cost effective than mains gas.

The secret of a heat pump is that is uses electricity an an efficiency of about (say) 350% (Remember that heat is leaking into the lake from underneath all the time).
This is called the COP - coefficient of performance of 3.5.
The less the range between input temperature and output temperature the higher the COP (hence the problem of the efficiency falling off when it is really cold outside).

Ah forgot about the lake getting heat from the ground underneath.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Officially too much time on my hands.

    guess what this is:

It's really sad, but it's the noise our door bell makes. I chose that tune out of the limited selection because it's the one that lasts the longest, and it's quite hard to hear the bell on the top floor.

    Congratulations!

You win the rest of my glass of red wine. I'm not sure I can be bothered to finish it.

I'm loving the 'new post' thing, thanks PN. Now I can read and comment on all manner of randomness. Like ladies with hairy armpits.

Most terms are used somewhat interchangably.

My sisters' school has letters around it, for working on the relevant bits of 3-day eventing. They call it a school, anyway (-:

OK, this is a very random question BUT, has anyone been for a cup of tea or anything like that at the House of Lords? Just wondering how they'd rate the experience.

    Yes - it was fun.

What are the essentials that people take with them on a 2/3/4 day break? Aside from toiletries, change of underwear, phone & charger, camera & charger, book & wallet, do I really need much else for a city break where I'm not exactly going to do much other than chill, wander about and stuff?

(have a feeling I've forgotten some really obvious stuff & am going to end up all :o when I read this thread in the morning...)

4 days, assuming this time of year and not a weird temperature place:

    Comfy trousers x 2
    comfy tops x 2
    jumper / cardigan x 2
    light jacket x 1
    pants / socks / etc x 4
comfy shoes for wandering about x 1
    straw hat
    evening type dresses x 2
uncomfy evening shoes x 1 (to match both dresses)
evening shrug / wrap / jacket etc x 1 (to match both dresses)
    tights x 2
    jewellary

    toothbrush & toothpaste
    conditioner
    moisturiser
    hand cream

    Books to read
    guidebook
    notepad
    pens x 2
    phone
    camera
    tissues
    make up

Are all these essentials? Frankly, I wouldn't go anywhere that required dressing up in the evenings.

You need one pair of jeans, one pair of shorts, three t shirts, one long sleeved top, a pair of trainers and enough underwear to last the number of nights you're staying. This has been proved as scientific fact. Oh and a toothbrush.

The mrs wants to take as many clothes for 3 nights as she took for a bloody month in australia! I have vetoed the lot.
