wow, round two of whoopsies on christmas eve deserves some sort of MSE award!

Its a great way tobuy meat joints especially but we're ok ATM...plenty to keep us going for months! For me this Christmas is going down as the calm and well organised one.

I once came home on Christmas Eve with a salmon, two turkeys, a couple of ducks and something else I can't remember, all for under £20.:j Hoteliers used to go down to Sainsburys and load up.

In later years, the supermarket seemed better organised, so it became more like a game of Russian roulette, with final reductions coming half an hour from closing. Many people caved-in before that and grabbed the sensibly-sized birds. The last year I did the 'Turkey Run' only huge turkeys were left, but by then, I was keeping a back-up in the freezer.:D

Now we don't usually buy supermarket birds, and Sainsburys is 21 miles away, so we miss out on these bargains. However, today we passed a fishmonger/game specialist who'd scrawled a notice saying 'Going on holiday - everything half price!' so we picked up a brace of pheasants and a guinea fowl. Almost like old times. :)

it's officially christmas now as we can't move for food in this house.

there is also the small problem that we aren't feeding 5000 and appear to have prepared enough for armageddon

Can I join in this evening just to feel sorry for myself? Seems quite on topic with your colds and whoopsie buying.

This is my fifth day in bed with flu. I just tried to force myself to feel better, had a bath, washed my hair etc but I am defeated and have made my way back to bed.

Christmas tomorrow with Hs family is almost certainly not happening for us. I trusted H to go to M&S and buy stuff for tomorrow instead. I've just been downstairs and he's bought precisely:
    A chicken.
    Frozen brussel sprouts.
    3 desserts.
    2 bags of crisps.

For dinner tonight he has bought 3x spagetti bolognese ready meals

I could seriously weep, in fact I'm fighting back tears right now. I know he can't be trusted to shop but yet I thought even he couldn't get this wrong. How wrong was I? Local Asda closes in 5 minutes, so that's it for us.

I know there are people worse off than us and I should be grateful for what I have but some kind of effort or thought would have been appreciated. I can't even speak to him right now. :(

Poor you. Any alcohol or chocolate in stock?

If it makes you feel better, I've just toiled for over an hour making my first attempt at duck pancakes. Only to be told that the duck wasn't crispy enough (possibly), the pancakes were too crispy (true) and broke into pieces, but the plum sauce was OK. Actually the plum sauce was diluted jam and the least likely to work out. Crossing that off the menu!

Oh Doozer.... Brussels were in short supply, so frozen may have been all he could get, people were practically fighting over them in Sainsburys yesterday. Per the 10 best things to eat at Christmas programme the other day, Chicken was in there. People who celebrate Christmas but come from the orient find Turkey too dry so they make dinner with chicken instead. But how you can turn two bags of crips into some roast spuds, that I don't know... Anything from the freezer you could use?

Do you know any neighbours? Send him out as most people will have bought too much for Xmas Day dinner. If you were here I could have easily brought you spuds, stuffing, carrots, parsnips, eggs/flour/milk for yorkies.... no booze though. Oh - and 2 litres of lemonade you could have had.

If you've bread, you can make your own stuffing, but you can't make the veg etc out of bread :(

I went out to look for last minute bargains, but there was nothing... I went early and checked the dates on what was on the shelves to gauge how much stuff might be reduced - and most stuff was dated 29th December to 7th January so they wouldn't reduce that. I did see turkeys at half price, £15, but that was about 4pm and I never bothered to go back later. We've everything we need, there's nothing that could be on whoopsie that could be eaten/used. Let others have it I thought.

Did pick up a small tub of sandwich filler, so I had a sandwich for late lunch and again for tea.
