OK, this is a very random question BUT, has anyone been for a cup of tea or anything like that at the House of Lords? Just wondering how they'd rate the experience.

Arguably the randomest question I've ever seen.

    Been invited their LIR?

I'd expect it to be posh/ludicrously expensive/all gratis.

Sorry that is of no help whatsoever!:o

Perhaps in the age of austerity/we're all in this together the lords take flasks in?:)
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

So according to Eon I used about 44,000 kwh of gas last year so if the water was at 5 degrees c cooling it to zero would only release one fifth of this so there would need to be some thermal input in to the water to achieve sufficient heating - however it might well keep the lake well frozen on the surface - I understand that water reaches its maximum density at about 4 degrees (hence only the surface freezes) so LIR could have another income with a skating rink.

Money wise converting electricity to heat is about 100% efficient whereas converting gas is probably at most 90% but electricity only costs about 3.25x as much as gas per kwh so ignoring capital costs it would seem that heating using the heat pump would be more cost effective than mains gas.

Decreasing the temperature of the lake by 1°C should therefore give a maximum energy of 8,400,000,000 J = 2333 kWh (call it 2000 kWh because we're only estimating and don't know things accurately).

A quick Google of efficiencies of these things suggests that by paying for 400 kWh of electricity, lir would be able to use her lake to get this 2000 kWh of heat energy into her heating/hot water system. However, I haven't found any information about how this ratio changes as the temperature of the external water source changes, and I haven't time to go looking for it.
    I think....

I suspect LIR might have her own seat if they hadn't got rid of the heredities.

Thanks silvercar. I'd seen it earlier, but had my laptop on mute so hadn't realised it did anything.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

What are the essentials that people take with them on a 2/3/4 day break? Aside from toiletries, change of underwear, phone & charger, camera & charger, book & wallet, do I really need much else for a city break where I'm not exactly going to do much other than chill, wander about and stuff?

(have a feeling I've forgotten some really obvious stuff & am going to end up all :o when I read this thread in the morning...)

except in Viva's case, because she, like Mary Poppins, is practically perfect :)

Nah. Been in the commons a couple of times, attending boring speeches by Tory mps about rubbish, when I was trying to knock off a bird from the university Tory society. I had a cup of tea out of a polystyrene cup I think. I would rate the tea at 3/10. I got a return on my investment of about 4/10. Wasn't worth it in the end.

Your work laptop and a 200 page report? That's what is coming out with me to Bruges this weekend. :(

Still I'm in a sad way quite excited about going on eurostar for the first time.
