I didn't want my dad to waste his money on a "new" car. His eye had been caught by the scrappage scheme a year back and he'd have been suckered into buying an £8k brand new car.... with £1k off... spending £7k. The most he's EVER spent on a car in his life before has been about £1k, so I pointed out that he could buy a perfectly acceptable car for £2-3k and instead of feeling pleased at pocketing £1k (a fake £1k obviously), he could instead pocket £5-6k. He's bought second hand now .... I spotted the first minor scrape on it within a week; brand new cars are wasted on people who will just bash them into things.0

It is weird, I find all the scratches I have had on my previous cars always seem to appear in the first few months.'Just think for a moment what a prospect that is. What is your project lir? Just in case I get a heads up on any shows scouting about........Those who will not reason, are bigots, those who cannot, are fools, and those who dare not, are slaves. - Lord Byron0 -
A friend of ours here was most upset last weekend, because her Mum & Dad had gone out and bought themselves a new car. She wasn't so much annoyed at the obvious waste of money, but at them daring to do such a thing at the age of 92. :rotfl:
That's quite good to be allowed to drive still at that age.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

That's extraordinarily kind of you Ninky, thank you.I found the app form for GD after all, but I don't think we fit anyway. New builds, pah. Phase one is stopping the house falling down (at one end anyway)and conversion of an old cheese room (current farm building) into a kitchen.
''My'' structural engineer was on GD before, and he said he thought our house was perfect for it in fact, but obviously, the brief is slightly different now. Our architect is also interesting chap, (don't really want to say anything that could id him here though) I would have thought. The only real innovation here is the heating system...if we can put it into practise. The only commercial units like the one we're thinking of are in the US so far as we have found. It will interact with solar definitely and then lake source heat pump (can't remember name but its not new) and ground source too, we think. We can't afford to do it all at once, but phase one is a sort of a ''clean'' stand alone phase.
I realise now, looking at the application stuff, why I watch GD less..
I've also thought about registering the house with one of those location agencies....it could be perfect for Cold comfort farm:rotfl::rotfl:At least that way it might earn something, even if we won't get the same GD advertising potential offers on bits. I was thinking if GD did it we might be able to get the kitchen finished with ''keen factor''. That's what happened on the one the structural engineer worked on before:D
its a shame really, the rojects where its all done no doubt make great tv, but a project like ours is more ''human''. over years with just a smidgeon of aspriation with the eco/lifestyle: not a whole load of aspiration. I suppose we're more 'ideal home'' than ''architectural digest''. That depresses me, I love AD.0 -

I know someone that was on DIY SOS. They were given a list of stuff that they had to have "lying around" that could be used in the do-up. The actual work they did had to be undone and redone within a week.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
