I've just got back from test-driving the Focus C-max. It seems fine to me - feels very much like the Tino. I didn't exactly fall in love with it, but it would be fine.

I'm well aware that I know diddly squat about cars, and I'm a cautious individual, so I told the bloke I wanted to get an RAC inspection done. He asked how quickly I could book it, so I said I didn't know. He said if it wasn't going to be until next week then he wouldn't be able to take the car off sale for that long. He began by saying he'd already got a couple of people lined up to look at the car - which I don't believe because it was only a few hours after I'd phoned to say I wanted to look at it and there was nobody lined up for it then, despite it having been on autotrader for at least a day - and then he said that he couldn't withdraw it from sale over the bank holiday weekend.

The RAC can't inspect it until next week - which he must have known would be likely to happen. I am beginning to feel he was trying to manoeuvre me into buying it without getting it inspected, which makes me wonder if he knows they will find something dodgy. My suspicions deepened when the RAC booking bloke said a car of that age and mileage would normally be around £6200 whereas this is on for £5000.

So I have called his bluff. I have booked the inspection for Wednesday, and said if he sells it over the weekend I will cancel the inspection. He's agreed that if it hasn't sold by Tuesday he will withdraw it from sale until after the inspection. The RAC have said that if I cancel the inspection before the end of Tuesday then they will transfer my money to an inspection on a different car without penalty.

    I'll keep you posted.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I went to WSM once but the sea had decided not to turn up that day. What's that all about?! Miles of muddy sand and no sea. I didn't like it at all.
You need to check the tide times/height before choosing to visit a beach - and the wind direction :)

You can't just turn up and expect it to be all lovely, like in the mags :)

Nope. Sorry, that is so wrong. Men can't be Witches. They are only allowed to be Warlocks. 'Tis in the rule book. The tough guide to fantasy land so it must be true.

Just heard the news about Elisabeth Sladen dying. That's quite depressing, really.

N'uhuh, but in the faith as real as any other male witches are ''witches''.

Ultimately, you don't need to spend anything in that part of the world because it's so nice to look at, other than petrol and an ice cream. And you could just stick a pin in the map and do a bit of a route round - you won't be disappointed!

May I just nip in here and add Bibury? More quaint houses and gifte shoppes, but also a river runs all the way through it, full of big trout. No one's supposed to feed them, but if you fill your pockets with cheap cat biscuits and flick them into the water surreptitiously, the effect is most amusing, (well, it used to please my youngsters anyway, and I enjoyed it too!) :):)

If you don't want to smell of cat biscuits, bread does just as well. ;)

    Congratulations!

(I take it it wasn't the one with the glossy red kitchen.)

Certainly not - there were more things wrong with that one than just the colour of the kitchen, such as it being a corridor rather than an actual room, inter alia!

Congratulations NDG, I have been seeing you around on the boards, so knew something was happening re purchasing a house.....it's so exciting though isn't it? I remember the day when we got the keys to our property, I felt like doing cartwheels down the road. No more having to get dressed to pick up the post (we had lived in a flat previously), no more worrying about the landlord letting himself in, no more worry about rent reviews....just ours to enjoy.

thanks Sue - it's exciting, for sure! Mind you, I never had a problem getting the post in a dressing gown, or bothered about the LL (she's a sweetie). Hope you're well and happy?

I don't know if things have changed, but at one time the Multipla was a great secondhand buy. It's so so ugly that secondhand prices were rock-bottom. I've no idea how robust it is, as it's a Fiat.

We;ve got a Fiat Bravo / Brava (can never remember whcih one it is) and it's wonderful. I got it for my sister's 21st birthday present, and it was 2 or 3 years old then. It's now 12 or 13 years old, and in the whole time we've owned it it's needed a new battery, new exhaust, new tyres, and that's it. It always starts, even this winter when it was snow / ice time and it hadn't been driven for 4 weeks. And it's fun to drive, too!

I am surprised. I thought sheep just run around happily, munch grass, get bigger. That sort of thing. What looking after do they need?

According to the bloke who keeps some sheep at my parents' place, sheep are the world's most stupid beings, except that they are incredibly inventive about finding new and exciting ways to kill themselves.

I'm glad about that because I just waded in!! Phew.

Congratulations NDG. I've seen you on the DIY board too - would love to see the 'before' pictures :D

It's not terrible, the place we're buying - just very, very tired and shabby.
