Is there any research that says we are more likely to be ill when we are on holiday? I sometimes think some how the imperative of having to do something somehow manages to delay lurgies which then take full control once we have the chance to relax?

Glad you are loving the house.
    I think....

One simple reason it doesn't flush is that the handle has come loose from the flushing mechanism. You can probably do a quick fix that will get you going until the maintenance men arrive. Tell me, is the handle all floppy, sort of hanging down?

Exactly that...unfortunately, the loo is ancient and the screws rusted tight and no amount of tugging at the screws will make them loosen so that we could do a fix.

I did think about doing my normal Mrs Bodge and son but ended up cursing the screws :D
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

As a temporary fix, can't you loop a coat hanger through the thing that the handle should be attached to?

I did read some years back that if you have to keep going, to be at work, then your body keeps dragging itself there.... but come the weekend/a day off it knows it's time to completely collapse and give in to illnesses.

    Curse of the workers :)

On the plus side with the loo, at least you don't now have to find an 'affordable plumber' (oxymoron), wait in 3x for him to not appear.... then be so pleased when he does turn up and fix it that you're happy to pay the bill of £250 and the bl00dy VAT of 20% on top.

    :)

One winter when I lived in a static, the water system completely froze up. For five days I had to go next door with a bucket and beg for a bucket of water so I could flush the loo ... they had a posher van, with double glazing and proper heating.

Are you saying the cistern lid is screwed down?
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Yep, it is screwed down...whether that was because previous tenants did something with it or not I have no idea.

PN - It is one thing I am grateful for and is the reason why I don't make a song and dance about things when they go wrong, we are lucky that they can get fixed for free so a few days is neither here nor there. It was the same when the boiler broke down last winter, we knew it would be fixed and that the parts not being available was out of their control, so lived with it until they could fix it by borrowing electric heaters from my parents.

I suppose it helps that I come from a family where money was not always readily available when I was small, we got used to doing without or managing when things went wrong and never made a song and dance about it...we just along with it as best we could until things were remedied.

I thought you meant the handle screws were stuck.

ugh, loo flushing with a bucket is no fun at the best of ties but with a bad back and a houseful I'm hoping the HA can get round quickly!
