No, don't do it! I didn't realise that you only get 1 years revenue on a question you are assigned. So you get a 60% share of revenue on your work for one stinking year. And if the person doesn't assign you, you either get nowt OR you get a share of the revenue granted by a formula they don't even explain. What a crock of...
Hard finding things to answer there though.
A 60% share for one year is more than we get from MSE - and MSE is funded via hundreds of affiliate links and promotions.
I need to be in it ..... because then I can write about it. I can get three articles out of it... and the articles will make more money
*points to head* .... up here for thinking!0 -
Forums: Local, really local. Your village, your town. Needs structure thinking out - and a "wrapper" of a site for the rest .... but, local can win.
I've got a local site, not finished it yet (are any ever finished??), it's stuffed full of income opportunity, but no forum. Forums are a pain in the butt because people misbehave and argue.0 -
I was too busy wondering if I could copy site, hire some indian writers to make it look busy, and then advertise it in the job section of local newspapers to get suckers to write loads of content for free. 60% of an article for a year... that's penuts. You might as well be working for slave wages. Dang, I wish I was an immoral scrooge, I could make so much money...
But, I'll do a lot of nasty things, but I'd find it hard to live with myself exploiting the desperate like that.PasturesNew wrote: »A 60% share for one year is more than we get from MSE - and MSE is funded via hundreds of affiliate links and promotions.
I like posting to MSE. It is fun, about topics I enjoy. I don't like posting to webanswers. It is work.
EDIT:
Just to add to this, it's strange that I don't feel the same about hubpages.com, seekyt, xomba, or any of the other sites... it's not the fact that you are sharing revenue that upsets me, it is the fact that they aren't upfront about how they share most of the money out. Probably 90% of the questions aren't assigned. The rest of the questions which aren't assigned they won't tell you how the money is split. So you can't know whether you will be paid x,y, or z because you don't know the formula they are splitting most of the money by. Maybe I am cynical. When I did my first few posts at hubpages, the first thing I did was check whether I was getting the right number of ad impressions. Burnt a lot of times in the past.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

Anyone see Mary Queen of Shops tonight? I know lir says if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all, but there was a man on there that was so odious I wanted to make an effigy of him and stick pins in it.
Next week they are doing estate agents. In the clip, one of them really did say "west facing is the new south facing".Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? It's not the technical stuff. I can do the technical stuff, to set them up. But I've never managed to get past the technical stuff to actually getting enough people into the forum so it isn't... like empty.
I've tried it a couple of times.
The normal procedure is:
1) Set up a forum
2) ????
3) Wind whistles through trees
4) 2,336,233 spam bots arrive
5) shut down forum
My sites are so niche, people don't tend to actually want to read most of my content. It's a kind of... I came... I saw... I clicked a link out.
With mine it was
1. Eeeekk, no site better set one up
2. Told everyone via another related site
3. Got very busy
4. Had a few spam bots but very few
5. Been going since March 2005 and still going strong with thousands of members and more joining daily.
My site was only ever set up as a temp stopgap for a week at the most, I never intended to be the person behind it, it was just a desperation move when our usual site had been hacked and the person behind our service went into meltdown over it. By the time another site had been set up (which took about 6 weeks), no begger wanted to move and we had over 1000 members....a figure that the other site had not managed at all.
My strategy for keeping our members and appealing to new ones? Facebook, Twitter, related forums, constant advertising via a fleece I wear out and about in my daily life (you wouldn't believe the amount of people who comment on it) and the constant strive for a professional and positive experience whilst they are on the site...even if I do talk about wobbly bits, whips and goodness knows what else to 'work' the threads and keep the interest up.
I don't make any money from it though...it was never intended as a money maker but as a voluntary service by fans for fans but I do get to keep my admin and team management skills honed alongside working to a very tight timeline under extreme pressure at times.
I had no site building skills at the time, all I had was my experience from work of managing lots of people on deadlines and the quality training we all (very boringly) had to undergo. We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -
I scored 33%. Mind you, it would be a bit difficult for my household to have more than one car, since I'm the only person over 10 living here.
ETA I want to know what lir scores!Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -
