what happens to unmarried gypsy women? Those for example, who are considered fast and lose? Are they provided for....if they left school so early and can't get work to support themselves?

How do they get round the requirement for home education to replace school education?

I clearly remember thinking last time that I wish they'd cover this in more detail....I didn't just mean a longer programme. so they only half heard me!

I find the way its presented sort of not nice.
I think its difficult programme making because there still is a lot of fear between gypsies and ...what is it...gorgeys? ...but I find it interesting.

Lir, it is spelt gorgey or gorgie sometimes but I normally spell it gadje (though gorgie is how you would hear it). It's what rom people call outsiders. When wageslave calls us country girls, that's like an Irish traveller equivalent.

There were bits of tonight's programme I found sad too. Not about the way of life, but some of the gratuitous camera angles that made judgement without saying anything.

I also wish the programme was more explicit about the travelling community that they are portraying because at the moment they are talking as though Roma and Irish travellers are the same and they are fundamentally different, with different customs etc. For example, the programme tonight said about the role of communion in a traveller's life. Well my nan was a romany traveller and she didn't have one because she was a protestant (with a small p as she was into all sorts of other forms of ritual that are specific to the community).

I thought the prog was interesting. Also interesting article in The Times today about travelling communities. Basic message is that, apart from not trusting the unknown, the reason that travelling communities are unpopular is because they set up on sites in breach of planning laws where as home owners have to go through months of planning just to put an extension on their house. Argued that if travelling communities actually travelled there would be less hostility.

Thank you viva. I think I've said that when we settled back in UK my parents bought near a permanant camp? The ''head'' of that group was always really nice to me, looked out for my ponies etc (during one of those phases where sexual and physical attacks were ocuring on horses there was almost a continual watch on mine...he said he wanted no blame coming the way of his families and so the way to get no blame was to make sure there was no trouble.) He also used to try and sell my ponies all the time, or to ride ponies for prospective buyers. He had a grandson about 10 year older than me and I got the impression that they wouldn't have minded if I returned the looks I got from him :D

Silvercar, I think a great deal of it is about ''unfairness'' and inconsistency. Its very interesting because we have a few people locally who have set up permanently (remembering the views of my childhood neighbour this doesn't bother me at all, I hope with time if I get to meet them )they'll prove as alert eyes as he was) and there is also a leasehold longterm camp that is approaching the end of its term and they have to leave.

In fact, thats hot gossip atm, its even got to me as a newcomer....the council paid an unbelievable amount for some tarmac there....quarter of a million, and now wants the village (the land is in a complicated trust for local benefit) to pay to undo the tarmac....they are not allowed to leave it there...because its contravenes planning :rotfl:...it should be green field. fifteen years the lease was. quarter of a million for fifteen years does seem pretty poor value. edit: for me....I think the planning issue is relevant...but not a much as some people think. I have litle problem with people living differently to me if it doesn't cause me harm, danger or loss. The thing that bothers me more is the cash economy and evasion. I'm also don't like hostility....but that's the same with any group or minority.

My good news of the day......eldest has been made a prefect at school!
My bad news of the day.....I am still struggling with my TMA and middle son is now on his second day off school with a heavy cold/flu.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

It gets better.....have finished and submitted the TMA. Had thought I was below the word count and would have to mess about with it to get the count up but once it was typed up, I was actually bang on the limit and it only needed a few revisions.

Goodness, I need a cup of tea....it always leaves me completely drained!

I have a couple of rather big decisions to make - would anyone care to offer me advice at the other place, please?
    I think....
