Aren't there any announcements on your local council's website?
Yes they do have them and i was keeping an eye on it but the BBC one seems to be updated quicker.
The irony of it all was the school WAS finally listed as closed on the council site - at 3.45pm :D

That's hardly worth it. :D Our council website clears all the schools at 4pm ready for the following day.
  • We recieved a texy from DD school this morning saying they are open bring children to school but be carefull as noone has cleared paths... but children will be safe once in building(due to snow maybe 5cm?)

Wow, 5cm of snow... We had 25cm falling today and guess what? The schools are still open.
So had to drag out the littleys for nothing - 1 hates the snow :(

So if it wasn't for the school, you'd be keeping the kids at home? A walk won't kill them, believe me!

The books are sitting just there on the floor.

  • Our council only decided at 8.20 yesterday to close all schools. Oldest son was not happy:( as he was only 10 mins from school and had to about turn the 3 wee ones hadnt left yet so they just stayed in:). I was already at work and my husband was going out to a job so my boss let me away:T. We had a great day we went sledging and had snowball fights. We had a great snow day:j
    All schools back today

  • I think that a lot of schools rely too much on the 'H+S' argument because they don't want the risk of being sued by parents. Mostly people are taking H+S legislation to extremes rather than seeing what it actually says. If so many people weren't so keen to sue over trivial matters then there wouldn't be half the problem.

I can understand genuine reasons - not enough staff members, no heating, no lunch available. But not 'ooohhh, they might slip on the snow'. Well grit it then, or tell them to be careful.

When I was younger we had 1 day off school due to snow, and that was only becuase some older children stood outside the school gates and told everyone that school was closed, when it wasn't. :D When it snowed, the teachers and dinner ladies got the school sledge out and everyone had a go on it

  • I've just had a carry-on at our school, got there, to be told by another parent it was closed, the janitor had sent them and several other parents and a teacher away as the playground etc. aren't safe. We went in anyway to do something else, and lo and behold the school is open, but not all teachers are in, and "if you want to leave your children you can, but please make sure we have an emergency contact number" They looked as if they didn't think anyone should be there, but I suppose they need to do what the council are telling them. The weather is meant to be taking a nasty turn today, and I am worried I should have just brought the boys home. If its desperate my sister lives really near the school and can get them for me.

My grandson attends nursery at a local school.

The head teacher (who is a mad power crazy woman!) drives in from another town on motorways and dual carriageways which have all been nicely gritted/cleared). Parents and kids generally have to walk, and as everyone knows the pavements have been pretty lethal.

And yet they won't let the kids out at break because it isn't safe...beggars belief. I assume because the school isn't responsible for any accidents on the way.

we really do live in a confused nanny state.

And my daughter, who is a supply teacher, doesn't get any work because every other school in the area is shut.

We had four burst pipes today and it set the fire alarm off meaning we had to stand outside for an hour!!! It was -10!!!!

The heating was on the blink and we were all in coats, hats and gloves all day. In my room I had 8 bunsen burners on the go all day to try and warm the room up. FREEZING! No idea why we stayed open...it was silly.

People say that schools never used to close in the past. I remember in the 70s, our school closed quite a few times due to the heating being broken. And when it rained heavily, we used to have indoor breaks. Maybe we were just soft. :D
