  • My sons school was closed as the delivery for lunch couldn't get through - no school dinners so no school.

Teachers certainly don't want a closure. Apart from anything else, as a governor, we will be asked to discuss whether or not there should be loss of pay for teachers. While I know that self employed people will lose money I would guess that a lot of those in regular salaried employment will not have this threat.

I am certain that if the schools had the system of Snow Days like they have in America and Canada fewer would close. A day closed that is then taken off the Christmas Holidays would I am sure encourage everyone to make more effort to get to school and ensure that the premises is safe for students.

    what a stupid idea
  • If the school is closed for health and safety rules then fair enough. Yes it a pain in the rump but hey ho. I walk a mile up hill to get my dd to school and its not easy when its freezing cold. Here as we dont have snow there is a good layer ice on the floor. Thats is more dangorous then snow.

But my question is why cant the teachers send some work home that need to be done before they go back to school.

Nikkynoo...there is always work for the kids to do. But they don't do homework at my school when they do have it!!

The problem with setting work to do on a day like today is that nothing will be prepared...and for some teachers it will take them long enough to get back home. All my classes know the options open to them and I always reinforce the options with parents when I speak to them...those that want to work will, those that don't......

yesterday we rang one of my sons schools to see if it was open, and they said it was, only a few turned up, so they set about building an igloo outside, and were sledging, they were then sent home at 11, as the dinners from a nearby school couldnt get thru, so he was sent home, my other lads school has been closed all week, but that is up a very narrow windey hilly lane
loves to knit and crochet for others

Must be hard being a non working parent and "dragging" kids to school only to have to "drag" them home again and waste a whole hour of your time.

One of our local schools dinners couldn't get through either. There was just a message on the council website to bring a packed lunch instead. Maybe your school didn't want them to go without something hot to eat in this cold weather? But really, I don't see the problem with a packed lunch instead. I'm sure it's warm enough inside and if it's that cold they can just keep the pupils indoors at lunchtime. :)

We had a lovely day instead. I persuaded the boys that they were husky dogs, and they could pull the sledge loaded with our shopping back from the local supermarket !

I don't 'drag' my kids I have to drag a double buggy with two 2 year old boys strapped inside through 3inchs of snow and ice up a very long road and a steep hill as well as watch my 5 year old to makes sure she dosn't fall over / or get run over by the nutters that skid about on the ice.

Believe me i would gladly be at work, sadly not possiable as with twins and no family to support me (except my husband) I would be paying more in childcare than i could earn. When they start nursery school i will be looking for a part time job to fit in with them.

Sadly as my hubby has a good job any course's i could go on to help me with this are extreamly expensive - If we were on benifits there would be more options... but were not so we get on as best we can.
