School shut - only when we arrived :(

We recieved a texy from DD school this morning saying they are open bring children to school but be carefull as noone has cleared paths... but children will be safe once in building(due to snow maybe 5cm?)

dragged a double buggy and DD on a sledge to the school.... to be told to go and wait in the warm hall???

10 minutes later was told erm no school is closed WHY most of the kids and teachers were already there?

So had to drag out the littleys for nothing - 1 hates the snow :(

..... and just had a text saying despite our best efforts school will be closed tomorrow as well.

I think teachers want a long weekend ;)

Have a nice day with your kids - get out and build a snowman, do some sledging, and just be glad you don't have to arrange childcare and get yourself to work.

I'm sure the teachers arranged the snow just to get a long weekend, yes.

yes those teachers are so lazy it has nothing to do with the fact the health and saftey brigade think its too dangerous for kids to go to school or the fact there insurance doesent cover them in severe weather conditons

If they don't have enough teachers in then they legally cannot look after the children. Enjoy the day off!

  • In your defence, i'd find that slightly annoying too. We went to school and were told we would have a text within 30 mins to tell us if they would be closing. Shame they couldn't decide this slightly earlier. School text to say they were staying open afterall. Some of our teachers have maybe half hours drive to reach us so they could have more snow than we do here so can appreciate the trouble school has is not enough teachers can get in. Hope you enjoy your long weekend with the kids.

I got DS into school this morning as school is open but have just had a call from him to say so few people are in they can come home if they can get home - so guess I'm going out again ! They've done no lessons this morning as 'it's not worth it with so few in' and aren't allowed outside due to H&S

He's delighted though and looking forward to an afternoon in the snow with all his friends whose schools didn't open today :)

School can't do right for doing wrong. If they decide to close early on, it's too early; if they decide too late, parents can't get care sorted. All they're thinking of is the safety of the kids and the legislation surrounding it. If your child broke its leg sliding around in the payground, you'd soon be moaning.

If you have children, sometimes you're inconvenienced and have to look after them. It happens.

  • That's true nicky, but I remember well when I was a child the only time we were off school was because the ancient boiler broke and the pipes were all frozen solid, we went to school in the snow, we played out in the playground in the snow, and each classromm has a clotheshorse for the gloves etc., and the rads were covered in wet jackets. There is too much elf and safety in some respects.

  • If they had said at 8 this morning - no school then fine... but we had a text to say yes school is open...

So bundled 2 todlars up and dragged a double buggy through the snow to my dd school...

We arrived a 9 am - and was sent to the big hall my daughter was playing with her school friends

All teacher in were in the hall already talking to the head.

Then we were told no school ???

We left soon after as it was beginning to get heated as quite a few parents had agreed to go to work themselves after finding out school WAS open and now had no childcare.....

My DD has already decided we are making snow rabbits this year? rarther than snowmen as they are boring but thanks for the tip :)

We had this yesterday! Rang the school at 8.20 to be told 'Yes we're fully open, come along, the more the merrier!' - OH was just around the corner from the school at 8.45 to be met with a wave of parents bringing their kids home, telling him that the school was now closed. Seemed odd that it could go from 'fully open, the more the merrier' (which implies that plenty of teachers have arrived) to closed within half an hour, but ok...

Weird thing was, we then received an email from HT yesterday evening, explaining her initial decision to remain open then subsequent decision to close the school at midday and apologising for the inconvenience!!

That's so weird! My 4YO has also been expressing a preference for snow rabbits too!
